Inspiration

We were inspired by our cities objective of growing non-profits and furthering volunteer work in our communities – also by our personal experiences struggling to find organizations and specifically events on our timeline, that meshed with our interests, and including our peers.

What it does

Peek Impact is your one stop shop for all things volunteering. Our design is inspired by linked in and handshake with engaging social media feeds that build connection and foster activism. After creating an account, Peek Impact gives you personalized recommendations of events we think you would enjoy. Peek Impact is engaging – featuring an Impact score and leaderboard designed to motivate you to get out there and make a difference!

How we built it

We designed the web app using a Nuxt backend with a Vue frontend. We chose vue because our frontend-specialized developers already had experience with it, and we chose Nuxt because it is a backend designed to be used with vue, and because of the robust set of libraries that come with it. We began by designing a frontend layout and connecting it to a database to hold the users, events, and organization profiles. After that, we incrementally increased the scope of the project until we felt it was completed.

Challenges we ran into

One of the big challenges we ran into was our volunteering certificate – a pdf generator demonstrating proof of volunteering hours. Also, it was a challenge to merge our extensive list of front end features with their backend infrastructure and to handle all of git merge conflicts that arose due the the sheer amount of code we wrote over such a short period of time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of the things we’re really proud of is how visually clean the app looks. The layout feels modern, dynamic, and intuitive. Secondly, We are really proud of the amount of functionality we were able to implement. It really feels like a fully deployed web app. Finally, we are proud of creating and designing an app with a real world impact. Each of us feels like this is an app that we would use, and that feels cool.

What we learned

We learned how to develop together as a team – delegating tasks and building off of each other's ideas – in order to create an app in 24 hours that otherwise would have taken several weeks. We learned how tech can really make an impact and solve real world issues. We built a tool that can bring people together and every step of the way we faced technical roadblocks which we overcame by working together.

What's next for Peak Impact

Our next steps would be to finish the message system so users can ask organizations questions about events, and talk to other users on the app. Another thing we would hope to accomplish is creating an algorithm to serve users events that are personalized to them based on friends, interests, and past events.
