Inspiration

I was inspired to build a zero based budgeting app because not only was I a developer, but I also had more than 7+ years of budgeting and financial engineering my families finances. On top of that I also attended Financial Coaching training and interacted with paying clients. Combining all of my experience to building a financial health platform, which includes the Zero based budgeting app felt like the right move. I am also super excited to innovate in ways that I know could make my life easier, for example automating transaction classification with users still in the drivers seat. Zero based budgeting does require the person operating it to still be active but just like cruise control for vehicles we can make your ride a bit easier.

What it does

A zero based budgeting app, which is about bringing in a management layer on top of your finances that helps you engineer your financial situation. It keeps financial stress at bay, and increases your purchasing power, which then compounds year on year.

How I built it

I build it primarily using golang, gingonic, and templ on the backend, and HTML, CSS, Vanilla JS, and bootstrap on the frontend. Backend is almost scalable, and deployed on Linode.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenges have been my own inexperience, as you work on something your mind has light bulb moments where it goes OH! I could do it this way and its better organized or more secure. When these moments happen its hard to put them aside and rework the project at a later time. I have had to rewrite somewhere between 5k - 10k code prior to MVP release.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Diving into front-end work to create this app has been a roller coaster of learning for me. I am proud to see the full project coming together as each piece starts to fall into play.

What I learned

Code organization, which keeps changing as the code base grows. I have had to reorganize the code base multiple times, and has been critical in my ability to process the increasing complexity.

What's next for Peaceful Mindful Pocket

We are releasing by end of January 2025, where we will open our doors to anyone who wants to learn how to engineer their financial situation, keep financial stress at bay, and operate at higher capability due to being intentional with their money. We offer free 1 on 1 coaching included in our yearly plan.
