In lieu of the recent attacks involving students near CMU, we decided to take initiative in creating an interactive web app that displays recent crime locations from official Pittsburgh Police reports in combination with Google’s navigation API to provide students with the most awareness of their surroundings during their walks around CMU. Combined with Google Maps and data analysis, our app offers a heat map that highlights high-crime-activity to warn students of dangerous areas, along with filters to specify locations of different crimes of varying severity. Students walking at different times of day can also choose a time frame of choice to more accurately see recent crime trends around CMU during that time period. Ultimately, we hope our project helps keep students safe and more secure during their walks, keeping their minds focused on everything else CMU has to offer.
