Inspiration
In Morocco, families, students and small offices share PDFs on tiny phone screens. We already have PDF Maroc Android app with thousands of users. We asked: why not bring documents to the biggest screen in the house? The TV. That's why we built PDF Maroc TV for Amazon Fire TV.
What it does
PDF Maroc TV is the first Fire TV PDF viewer built for Moroccan families:
- View PDFs on big screen in 4K
- Navigate with Fire TV remote (DPAD, zoom, next/prev page)
- Voice control with Alexa: "Alexa, open my contract", "Next page", "Zoom in"
- Cloud sync via AWS S3: upload from phone, view instantly on TV
- Presentation mode for offices, schools and families
How we built it
- Frontend: React Native for Fire TV + Web SDK
- PDF Rendering: PDF.js optimized for TV low memory
- Backend: AWS S3 + Amplify for storage and auth
- Voice: Alexa Presentation Language (APL) + Alexa Skills Kit
- Reused our existing PDF Maroc logic (JPG to PDF, OCR, merge)
Challenges we ran into
- Optimizing PDF.js to run at 60fps on Fire TV Stick 4K
- Building remote-only UX (no touch screen)
- Supporting Arabic / French right-to-left documents
- Making Alexa understand Moroccan document names
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Converted our existing Android app to TV in record time
- 60fps smooth PDF scrolling on Fire TV
- Fully working Alexa voice navigation
- Real, useful product for 36M Moroccans and beyond
What we learned
Fire TV is not just for Netflix. In emerging markets, TV is the main shared screen and can be a powerful productivity tool.
