Inspiration

Small businesses and freelancers often find out about a payment hours or days after it happens. Invoices go unpaid, refunds slip through, and cash flow turns into guesswork. We wanted a way to feel the "pulse" of your money as it moves, so we built PayPulse, a live view of your PayPal activity.

What it does

PayPulse connects to your PayPal account and:

  • Shows incoming payments, refunds, and disputes in real time
  • Sends instant alerts when an invoice is paid or goes overdue
  • Summarizes cash flow with simple daily and weekly insights
  • [Add your standout feature here]

How we built it

  • Payments: PayPal [Orders / Invoicing / Webhooks / Transaction Search] APIs
  • Backend: [Node.js / Python / etc.] to receive webhook events and process them
  • Frontend: [React / Next.js / mobile framework] for the dashboard
  • Database and hosting: [PostgreSQL / Firebase / Vercel / etc.]

Each webhook event is verified, stored, and pushed to the dashboard so the user sees updates within seconds. For the insights view, we calculate a simple rolling average of daily revenue:

$$\bar{R}t = \frac{1}{n}\sum{i=0}^{n-1} R_{t-i}$$

Challenges we ran into

  • Handling PayPal webhooks reliably, including retries and duplicate events
  • Working in the sandbox environment and simulating realistic payment scenarios
  • [A real challenge from your build, such as time limits, auth, or a tricky bug]

Accomplishments we're proud of

  • A working end-to-end demo with live PayPal sandbox payments
  • [Something specific, such as a clean UI, a fast alert time, or a feature you didn't expect to finish]

What we learned

We learned how event-driven payment systems work, why idempotency matters when money is involved, and how much a clear UI helps people trust a financial tool. [Add anything personal or technical.]

What's next for PayPulse

  • Multi-currency support
  • Smart forecasting of upcoming cash flow
  • Integrations with accounting tools like QuickBooks
  • [Your own roadmap idea]
