Inspiration
Online shopping can offer thousands of products, but helping customers discover relevant items and make informed purchasing decisions remains a challenge. PayPilot AI was created to explore how AI-assisted recommendations can make the shopping experience more intelligent and convenient.
What It Does
PayPilot AI is an AI-powered shopping application that combines an e-commerce experience with an AI recommendation component. The project focuses on connecting intelligent product recommendations with a practical web application rather than treating AI as an isolated demonstration.
Key areas include:
- Product discovery and shopping workflows.
- AI-assisted product recommendations.
- A web interface connected to a Python backend.
- API integration and error handling.
- A fallback recommendation path when the external AI provider is unavailable.
How We Built It
The application uses a web frontend and a Python API backend. The recommendation component integrates with an LLM provider, while a deterministic fallback provides an alternative when the provider cannot be used.
We emphasized engineering quality throughout development, including automated tests, linting, type checking, production-build validation, and continuous integration.
Challenges and What We Learned
One important challenge was handling external AI dependencies reliably. An application should not assume that an AI provider will always be available, so fallback behavior and clear separation between application functionality and external services matter.
We also learned the importance of validating individual components, documenting setup requirements, and distinguishing between a feature's implementation and its successful operation in a configured environment.
Current Status
The codebase, automated checks, and CI workflow have been validated at the development checkpoints completed so far. Live AI-provider operation is still limited by API quota availability, and the PayPal Sandbox checkout flow has not yet been fully verified.
These limitations are part of the current project status; we will not represent unverified functionality as production-ready.
What's Next
Our next priorities are to demonstrate the shopping workflow, validate the recommendation experience under available conditions, and complete the remaining payment-integration and deployment checks.
