Inspiration

Freelancers already know who to bill. The slow part is turning that sentence into a bill and a way to get paid. PayPilot is that step, and a person still has to approve it.

What it does

You type a sentence such as "Invoice Maya Chen at [email protected] for 6 hours of brand design at $140." Grok turns it into a draft: name, email, line items, and a USD total. Nothing is created until you approve it. You can also throw the draft away.

On approval, PayPilot creates a PayPal sandbox checkout for that total and puts the link on the ledger. Marking it paid only sticks if the payer has approved the order in PayPal. You can print the bill and add a logo.

How we built it

The app is a TanStack Start site. The chat asks Grok for a structured draft. A small local parser handles the same requests when the model is unavailable, so a draft never depends on a live model call. PayPal is the Orders v2 API in the sandbox: the server logs in with the app credentials, then creates a checkout order whose invoice id is the bill number.

Challenges

This sandbox app can take payments, but PayPal refused the Invoicing API because the app does not have that permission. A real checkout was the honest path. We did not pretend an invoice had been emailed.

What we learned

The useful part is the approval gate. The model can draft the bill. The person decides whether money is requested.
