Across Africa, millions of young people rely on multiple mobile money services and bank accounts to manage their daily finances. Despite this, payments remain fragmented, insecure, and heavily dependent on PINs and passwords, which are easy to forget, share, or compromise.
NovaPay was inspired by a simple question:
What if your identity itself became your wallet?
We wanted to explore a future where payments, budgeting, and financial planning are unified into one platform, secured by biometrics rather than passwords, and accessible across networks and locations without limits. NovaPay is designed with youth and underserved communities in mind, focusing on simplicity, security, and inclusion.
NovaPay is a biometric-first unified payment system that allows users to:
- Authenticate using biometrics instead of PINs or passwords
- Link multiple wallets and accounts in one place
- Send and receive payments seamlessly
- Create unlimited budgets for daily expenses such as food, transport, or rent
- Set financial goals and track progress over time
- View reports and insights to better understand spending and saving behavior
By combining payments, budgeting, and reporting into one platform, NovaPay empowers users to take control of their finances in a secure and intuitive way.
For this hackathon, we built a functional front-end prototype to demonstrate the full user experience and flow of NovaPay. The prototype showcases:
- User onboarding and registration
- Biometric-based authentication (simulated for web)
- Wallet management
- Budget creation
- Goal setting
- Financial reports and insights
- Scan and send payment flow (simulated)
The focus was on designing a realistic, scalable user experience that could later be connected to native biometric APIs and real payment infrastructures.
One of the main challenges was demonstrating biometric authentication in a web-based prototype, as real biometric access requires native mobile platforms. To overcome this, we designed a realistic biometric simulation that clearly communicates how the system would work in production.
Another challenge was balancing security, simplicity, and inclusivity — ensuring that the platform remains easy to use while addressing the real financial behaviours of young users across different regions.
Through building NovaPay, we learned the importance of:
- Designing security that is user-friendly, not intimidating
- Thinking beyond payments to include financial habits like budgeting and goal-setting
- Building with scalability and inclusion in mind from the very beginning
NovaPay represents a vision for the future of digital payments — one where identity replaces passwords, and financial tools work for everyone, without limits.
