🧠 Inspiration

We’ve all felt it: the strange burnout that comes not from working hard but from endlessly scrolling, swiping, and being mined for attention. We were inspired by a simple but powerful question: What if we treated our attention like a currency—and tracked how much of it we spend and save each day? PayMind was born out of our desire to challenge the passive surrender of focus to screens, especially for Gen Z and young professionals. We wanted to create a tool that not only helps users reclaim their time, but shows just how much corporations profit from their distractions. Our goal was to reframe screen time as a financial, emotional, and cognitive transaction.

đź’ˇ What it does

PayMind is a mobile-first web application that calculates the real-world cost of your screen time—and the value of your focus.

Here’s what users can do with PayMind:

  • Manually log screen time across popular apps (like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok).
  • See how much attention is lost each day, both in time and money.
  • Track pickups and notification counts to measure distraction debt.
  • Log productive activities and earn “Focus Points” for study, work, skill-building, etc.
  • Visualize and manage subscriptions with ROI analysis based on usage vs. cost.
  • Set financial goals and allocate reclaimed attention “savings” toward them.
  • Understand corporate profit models with “How They Profit” insights.
  • Export full attention reports as PDF or HTML.
  • Build an “Attention Wallet” with metrics like total saved time, total focus points, and money saved.

It’s not just a productivity tracker—it’s an attention economy awareness tool.

🛠️ How we built it

We built PayMind entirely using Bolt.new, in a single one-shot deployment prompt. The full frontend logic, UI, data management, and structure were scoped, designed, and coded in one go, adhering to strict hackathon constraints:

  • Framework: React Native via Expo (mobile-first design)
  • Backend: Supabase (PostgreSQL, Auth, RLS)
  • Languages: TypeScript + JavaScript
  • Core Tools & Libraries:

    • lucide-react-native for crisp, expressive icons
    • react-native-reanimated + gesture-handler for intuitive UI
    • @react-native-async-storage/async-storage for local theme memory
    • Custom hooks like useAuth and useTheme for modularity
    • Reusable components: GradientBackground, AnimatedSlider, AttentionCard, etc.

Tables in Supabase:

  • screen_time_entries, subscriptions, distraction_logs, goals, focus_activities, and attention_wallet, all secured with RLS.

The app supports both web and mobile and exports PDFs using expo-print and related APIs.

🧗 Challenges we ran into

  • Designing for reflection, not control: Most productivity tools focus on task output. PayMind’s challenge was to center awareness—not efficiency.
  • One-shot build constraint on Bolt.new: Every feature had to work in a single deploy. No backend tweaks, no external APIs. That forced us to optimize logic within strict limits.
  • Manual logging: Without OS-level screen tracking or AI, we had to make manual input not feel tedious. Creating emotional payoff (via Focus Points and ROI) was key.
  • Complex calculations with zero latency: All insights—like money saved, distraction debt, corporate profits—had to be computed client-side, fast, and correctly.

🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Every single feature works on a mobile phone—exactly as envisioned.
  • Built entirely in a single Bolt.new prompt with no post-deploy editing.
  • Created a powerful visual metaphor: Attention is currency.
  • Implemented real-world economic modeling (₹187.5/hour productivity cost, ROI models, and corporate profit ratios) with clean UI.
  • Designed a non-patronizing, Gen Z-aligned interface for attention management—no judgment, just transparency.
  • Attention Wallet + Focus Portfolio = something users feel proud of, not shamed by.

🧠 What we learned

  • You don’t need AI or system access to deliver emotional, data-rich insights.
  • Framing attention as capital makes the invisible visible—and lets people connect financial loss to time loss.
  • Simplicity drives use. The fewer screens, the better the adoption.
  • Mobile-first design thinking is key—even for reflection tools.
  • Supabase + Bolt.new is a powerful combo when structured carefully.
  • “Productivity” doesn't have to feel like punishment. With the right feedback loop, it can feel like investment.

🚀 What’s next for PayMind

  • Currency localization: Currently supports Indian Rupees (₹). We plan to add USD, EUR, and other currencies next.
  • Browser extension (non-AI, non-tracking): To sync with actual web usage patterns while respecting privacy.
  • Streak mechanics and badges: To turn long-term focus habits into achievements.
  • Attention Leaderboards: Gamifying savings and focus across friend circles.
  • Corporate Cost Breakdown: Let users see exactly how much each platform profits from their average day.
  • Minimalist mode: Even less UI, even more focus.
  • Partnerships with digital detox communities: To align tools with real-life behavioral health practices.
