PayGuard AI

Inspiration

Online shopping is convenient, but the payment process can still feel disconnected and vulnerable to mistakes or scams. I wanted to build something that makes e-commerce both safer and effortless by bringing a smart conversational assistant directly into the checkout flow.

What it does

PayGuard AI is a smart assistant designed to simplify online shopping and payment verification. It helps users analyze items, check for price anomalies, and interact naturally while handling payments through PayPal. Instead of jumping through multiple steps, users can review their order details and finalize payments seamlessly with PayPal integration.

How we built it

​Core AI Logic: Built using Python and LLMs to handle natural language requests and order verification. ​Payment Processing: Integrated PayPal Developer Sandbox APIs to manage order creation and secure transaction capture. ​Interface: Designed a lightweight Web UI to demonstrate real-time chat and payment prompts.

Challenges we ran into

Configuring the PayPal Sandbox environment and properly syncing payment status callbacks with the AI context was a bit tricky at first. Ensuring the assistant provided clear confirmation prompts before initiating any transaction required careful prompt structure and error handling.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully connecting an AI conversational interface directly with live PayPal sandbox transactions. ​Creating a clean, intuitive interaction flow that feels natural and secure.

What we learned

Working on this project gave me a much deeper understanding of RESTful payment APIs, webhooks, and how to safely trigger external actions using AI function calls.

What's next for PayGuard AI

Adding automated budget tracking and recurring payment management. ​Expanding merchant tools to help small businesses integrate PayGuard AI directly into their storefronts.
