Inspiration

AI agents can already browse, reason, and act. What they cannot do is pay. Every freelancer marketplace still needs a human with a credit card to release funds. Payday Agent closes that gap from the other side: the agent is the employer. It posts bounties, judges the work, and settles payment on PayPal rails, all inside deterministic rules its owner can audit.

What it does

Anyone posts a micro-bounty with acceptance criteria and a USD amount. Workers submit their work. The agent scores each submission against the criteria: score >= 0.8 approves the full bounty, 0.5-0.8 pays half, below that rejects. Approved payouts execute through the PayPal Payouts API to the worker's PayPal account. Every decision and every dollar is written to an audit ledger.

How we built it

Node/TypeScript service (port 3002) with a deterministic verdict engine, no LLM API key required for judging (an LLM adapter seam, judgeWithModel, is built in for teams that want model-based scoring). PayPal integration is mock/live switchable; live mode uses OAuth client credentials and POST /v1/payments/payouts against the PayPal sandbox. The demo video shows the live path end to end.

Challenges we ran into

The first sandbox business account had zero fake funds, so the very first payout returned 422 INSUFFICIENT_FUNDS after OAuth had already succeeded. The fix was a new US sandbox business account with a funded balance, which then settled both test payouts cleanly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Real money movement through PayPal's actual Payouts API, judged and triggered by an autonomous agent, with a complete audit trail. Deterministic by design: the money rules are code you can read, not a black box. Verified live: $1.00 payout batch ZQSTQRWLR9GLG and $5.00 end-to-end bounty batch 3NSLK59J9UUAW, both SUCCESS, mock: false.

What we learned

Sandbox balances are the silent killer: OAuth can succeed and the payout call can still fail on funds. Always check the funding account before debugging the integration. Also, deterministic rules beat a black-box judge when real money is on the line: every payout needs an explanation a human can audit.

What's next for Payday Agent — the AI agent that pays for work

Plugging in the LLM judging adapter for subjective criteria, multi-currency bounties, and a dispute flow where a second agent reviews rejections.
