Inspiration

Online payments are convenient, but users can still struggle to understand whether a payment request, transaction, or purchase is safe. We wanted to build a simple AI-powered assistant that helps users make safer and smarter payment decisions.

What it does

PayGuard AI is an AI-powered payment safety assistant that combines AI with PayPal to help users understand payment risks and complete payment-related tasks more confidently.

Users can describe a payment situation, paste a suspicious payment message, or ask questions about a transaction. The AI analyzes the information, identifies potential warning signs, explains the risk in simple language, and recommends a safe next step.

The application also uses PayPal's payment and commerce capabilities so that the AI experience is connected to a real payment workflow rather than being just a standalone AI chatbot.

How we built it

We are building PayGuard AI as a modern web application using Next.js and React.

The main components include:

• AI-powered risk analysis and recommendations
• PayPal integration for payment-related workflows
• A simple dashboard for users
• Secure server-side API routes
• Responsive and accessible UI
• Environment variables for protecting API credentials

We plan to use PayPal's developer tools and APIs to make the PayPal integration meaningful and functional.

Challenges

The biggest challenge was designing an AI experience that provides useful guidance without making unsafe assumptions about a user's payment situation. We focused on clear explanations, safe recommendations, and keeping sensitive credentials on the server side.

Another challenge was connecting the AI experience with an actual PayPal workflow instead of creating a simple AI wrapper.

What we learned

Through this project, we are learning how AI can be combined with real payment and commerce systems to create useful experiences. We are also learning about secure API integration, payment workflows, AI-assisted development, and building a production-style web application.

What's next

We plan to improve the AI assistant, add more payment scenarios, improve the user dashboard, strengthen security, and make the experience more useful for everyday online payments.
