PayFlow Overdraft
Inspiration
In emerging markets and gig-economy sectors, freelancers and micro-merchants frequently face short-term liquidity gaps. When their available PayPal balance is insufficient, essential transactions can fail, affecting inventory purchases, software subscriptions, and other business expenses.
Inspired by Kenya's Fuliza m-pesa mobile overdraft service offered by safaricom, PayFlow Overdraft introduces an opt-in, checkout-based credit facility for PayPal users. It bridges temporary cash-flow gaps by connecting users who need short-term credit with a dedicated funding account, helping them complete eligible payments without unnecessary disruption.
What it does
PayFlow Overdraft is a PayPal-integrated microcredit application that connects a dedicated creditor account with users who need temporary financial assistance.
- Dedicated Creditor Account: A designated PayPal Business sandbox account serves as the funding source for approved overdrafts.
- Insufficient Funds & Overdraft Request: When a user encounters a payment shortfall, the application offers an option to complete the payment with PayFlow. The user can review the proposed overdraft amount, applicable fee, and repayment terms before accepting or declining.
- On-Demand Fund Transfer: Once the user accepts and the request is approved, PayFlow initiates a transfer of the approved amount from the funder's account to the user's PayPal account, subject to the supported PayPal transfer capabilities.
- Payment Completion: After the funds become available, the user proceeds with the original PayPal checkout and completes the purchase through the normal payment flow.
- Microcredit Risk Assessment: PayFlow evaluates available transaction history and configured eligibility rules to determine an appropriate overdraft limit.
- Repayment Tracking: The application records outstanding principal, applicable fees, repayments, and available credit. Future deposits can trigger repayment reminders or repayment processing where the relevant authorization and supported payment mechanisms permit.
- AI Financial Assistant: An integrated assistant helps users understand their overdraft limits, outstanding obligations, transaction history, and repayment plans.
How we built it
- Backend: Python and Flask, organized into modules for checkout, overdraft requests, credit assessment, transfers, and repayment tracking.
- Database: SQLAlchemy models for users, funding accounts, overdraft requests, disbursements, transactions, and repayment records.
- PayPal Integration:
- Orders API v2: Creates and manages the original checkout payment.
- PayPal Payouts API: Provides a potential mechanism for transferring approved funds from the creditor account to the user's PayPal account, subject to sandbox configuration and API eligibility.
- Webhooks: Tracks supported payment and transfer events to maintain transaction status and prevent duplicate processing.
- Credit Management: An application-level credit ledger tracks the funder's available lending capacity, approved overdrafts, outstanding balances, and repayments.
- AI Assistant: Helps users understand their financial position and make informed decisions about short-term borrowing.
Challenges we ran into
- Transaction Consistency: Preventing duplicate transfers, duplicate overdraft approvals, and inconsistent balances when asynchronous events occur.
- Responsible Lending: Designing transparent fees, clear repayment terms, and sensible credit limits.
Accomplishments we're working toward
- A working sandbox demonstration of the complete flow: insufficient funds → user consent → overdraft approval → creditor-funded transfer → successful PayPal checkout.
- A transparent credit ledger that tracks the funder's disbursements and users' outstanding obligations.
- An opt-in borrowing experience that gives users control over whether they take an overdraft.
- An AI financial assistant that explains credit limits, fees, and repayment obligations.
What's next for PayFlow Overdraft
- Smarter Credit Assessment: Improve eligibility decisions using verified transaction history and responsible lending rules.
- Financial Wellness: Introduce cash-flow forecasting, repayment reminders, and spending insights.
- Multi-Currency Support: Explore overdrafts for cross-border freelancers and merchants.
- Funding Partnerships: Extend the creditor model to multiple funding partners and eligible merchant ecosystems.
