Inspiration

We wanted to create an app that would really make a difference, so that is where our idea for a charity related app came in. We thought back to popular charity events, and we remembered the ALS Ice Bucket challenge, a key feature of it being that you would nominate more people to do it after you completed it yourself. Thinking about how fast that spread, we decided to utilise this tactic for a more general charitable cause.

What it does

Imagine a platform where every good deed ignites a chain reaction of generosity. We are Pay it Forward, an innovative new web app that promotes kindness, community, and charity. Our app gives users opportunities to start “chains”, where they perform an act of goodwill, and then nominate another user to follow in their footsteps. With nominations constantly being fulfilled and new chains beginning, a powerful network of generosity quickly takes shape. It's clear the world needs more kindness, and Pay it Forward is the answer we've been looking for.

How we built it

We built the app using HTML, CSS and JavaScript for the frontend with NodeJS and ExpressJS for the backend. We used Google's Gemini 1.5 Flash for aiding user experience, and Bootstrap for pop-up modals. We used a REST API design.

Challenges we ran into

Starting with a different project, and swapping with just under 9 hours left on the timer left us with quite the challenge!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're really proud of the fact that we didn't fold under the pressure of starting a new project with so little time left!

What we learned

We learnt how to interact with Google's Gemini AI to generate responses. Additionally, we all brushed up on our web development skills and graphic design.

What's next for Pay it Forward

For Pay it Forward, the next step is to add further database connectivity, and we'd love to make the app as responsive as possible using React! Another nice touch would be to add a leaderboard where you can see your friends, gamifying the app would incentivise people to do even more good deeds!
