Inspiration

Giving blood is one of the most important things people can do to help save a life, but did you know blood donors are needed in the animal world, too?

What it does

Pawtector is an app that encourages people to learn about and get involved in pet blood donation.

How we built it

We researched current pet blood donation issues and existing pet blood banks in different countries. And we learned that according to research conducted by Royal Veterinary College states about 70% of people were not aware that pets could donate blood and they were unaware that pet blood banks existed, also 89% of pet owners were willing to donate if possible. Thus, our main goal is to educate people about why pet blood donations are important and provide the methods for them to get involved. Besides, our emergency blood request feature is to prevent the situation that hospitals do not have enough blood. We will send notifications to users who are close to the pet who needs help, and see if anyone would love to donate.

Challenges we ran into

None of us is an expert in pet blood donation, so we have to learn first, and then design.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

By using the earth tone pallet and simple instructions in the user interface, we created a calming atmosphere for both the doner and pet owner whose pet needs blood immediately

What we learned

We learned some knowledge on animal blood donation, and we learned how to come up with an idea and prototyping the whole product in such a short time.

What's next for Pawtector

We'd love to interview poeple who works in pet hospitals and pet blood banks to learn some deeper insights. We also want to test our prototype with real users, get some good feedback, and keep iterating.
