Inspiration
We were inspired by the Petfinder API that helps people query a large database of pets of many different species that need homes. More than one million suitable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States each year, simply because there are too many pets in shelters and too few individuals consider adoption when seeking a companion. Our goal is to provide people with an easy and quick method of finding their perfect friend from their local shelters or foster homes. We also wanted to do something that not only would benefit these pets but that also might benefit people's mental health.
What it does
Pawsitive lets people search by category of pets near a given zip code, so they can find available pets of whatever type! There is the contact information for the different shelters, or you can just enjoy the cute pet images.
How we built it
We built Pawsitive using Javascript (some npm modules) and then Parcel to bundle it. We also used HTML/CSS and some Bootstrap for styling.
Challenges we ran into
We had tried to use Firebase to potentially add login authentication and allow people to store favorites pets but had a lot of trouble and ultimately decided that for the scope of the hackathon we would instead include a contact page so people can get a hold of us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very pleased that we're able to run this and have pets displayed by zip code, as well as that we have multiple categories of pets to select.
What we learned
We learned a bit about bundling with parcel and troubleshooting that, as well as more about the Petfinder API.
What's next for Pawsitive
Ideally, we will have people be able to log in and maybe save some of their favorite pets they find in their searches! We also want to learn how to deploy it rather than keep it as a local host.
