Inspiration
While volunteering at a animal shelter, I met a young boy named Michael, who was battling a serious illness. Despite his health challenges, Michael had a remarkable spirit and a deep love for animals. During our conversations, he would excitedly talk about his pets at home and his passion for drawing. To help pass the time in the hospital, Michael would create imaginative outfits for his pets, and his face would light up with joy as he shared his artwork.
Inspired by Michael's creativity and resilience, I realized that there could be many more children like him who could benefit from a platform that would allow them to express their artistic talents and passion for animals. This idea sparked the creation of the Pawsitive Project, a website dedicated to providing a space for children facing illness or disability to design clothes for shelter animals, promoting both their creativity and the cause of animal adoption.
What it does
The Pawsitive Project is a website designed to help children who are sick or disabled by providing them with a platform to showcase their artistic skills through designing clothes for sheltered animals. The website aims to empower these children, raise awareness for animal shelters, and potentially increase adoption rates.
The website features a user-friendly drawing platform where children can create designs for clothes and accessories for animals. Once a child submits their design, it is verified to ensure the child meets the criteria of facing illness or disability. The designs are then brought to life and put on shelter animals, specifically focusing on those that have stayed the longest in the shelter. This helps to highlight the animals and draw attention to their need for a forever home.
How we built it
Used JS, HTML, CSS. (Mainly focused on JAVASCRIPT to incorporate drawing platform)
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge I faced was incorporating the drawing platform. I used a JS library called Fabric.js to import the drawing platform. I then stumbled upon a problem where whenever I used the erase function, it erased the entire image. So I had to double layer the canvas drawing platform. First layer being the image then the second layer being the drawing screen.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am really proud of coming up with the double layered drawing which really gave me hours upon hours of headache trying to solve it.
What we learned
As I built this website to help children with illnesses and disabilities, I gained a deeper understanding of the challenges they face and the positive impact that creative expression can have on their lives. This project allowed me to empathize with these children and better appreciate their unique talents and perspectives.
What's next for Pawsitive Project
As we continue to grow and evolve, the Pawsitive Project has ambitious plans to expand its offerings and further our impact on the lives of children and animals alike. Some of the exciting initiatives we envision for the future include:
Online Gallery: We plan to showcase a gallery of completed designs and heartwarming photos of shelter animals proudly wearing the kid-designed clothes. This visual representation of our mission will inspire others to join us in our cause.
Educational Content: We aim to offer age-appropriate educational resources about shelter animals, pet care, and the importance of supporting shelters, fostering a deeper understanding and compassion for our furry friends.
Partnerships: We will collaborate with shelters, hospitals, and other organizations to maximize our impact and expand our reach, ensuring that we can touch as many lives as possible through our collective efforts.
Donations: We plan to provide an option for visitors to donate directly to shelters or organizations that support children with illnesses, furthering our mission to create a more compassionate world and improve the lives of those we serve.
By incorporating these initiatives into the future of Pawsitive Project, we will continue to innovate, grow, and make an even more significant impact on the lives of children and shelter animals. Our commitment to our mission remains unwavering, and we look forward to seeing the incredible difference we can make together.
