Inspiration
Pawsitive was inspired by my own struggle with consistent health, which I only overcame once I got my dog Peanut. The fact that our lives are so closely intertwined meant that taking care of myself would be the only way I could take care of him. Peanut made me really engage with healthy habits in a way I was never able to by myself, and became the direct inspiration for Pawsitive.
What it does
Pawsitive is an iOS game that helps people get healthy by giving their in-game character energy for taking steps IRL.
How we built it
The app components use Flutter and HealthKit to measure steps. The game is built in Unity and packaged into Flutter.
Challenges we ran into
Making health feel accessible, but simultaneously challenging enough to be continuously motivating is a delicate balance.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
1) Bridging Flutter and Unity into a single codebase. (not trivial) 2) Coming up with a delightful and sensible way to tackle a difficult personal challenge.
What we learned
Simple incentives and rewards can spur massive, positive user behavior change.
What's next for Pawsitive
Pawsitive V1.0 will run its first competitive health game campaign in February. 10 winners will receive a TBD health prize, mailed to their doorstep. While the first game is just a simple 10-level maze, each month (or two months) will feature a brand new game and healthy prizes.
