Inspiration

We know the anxiety that comes from having to walk home late at night at Berkeley and we wanted to create an app to help the Berkeley community feel safe.

What it does

Paws & Go will allow Berkeley students to pin their location and find other students nearby who also are heading in the same direction. Users can select who to walk with then chat to figure out their plans. Users can also add warnings about events happening on and near campus to keep other users safe and up to date.

How we built it

We used proto.io to create a prototype UI including a model of connecting users and the chat. Our live chat feature hosted on Firebase was created using JavaScript and React using one of our workshop speaker's platform, expo.io. Backend code was created using Python.

Challenges we ran into

It was difficult to work on proto.io collectively as a team because progress was repeatedly erased. We came into the hackathon with little coding experience but were excited to learn.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of the idea being applicable to our fellow Berkeley experience and what we have accomplished given what little programming experience we had coming into this.

What we learned

If you verify an email on python it just verifies that the symbols are used, not that it is a verified email. We also learned how to use and model a UI interface on proto.io. Our teamed learned how to use expo.io, and we have been able to synthesize a lot of basics of prototyping, expo.io and other coding experience.

What's next for Paws & Go

We recognize that there are bugs, such as the verification and further coding, which we hope to work out in the future. We also hope to add a friends feature and further live alerts.
