Inspiration The bond between a pet and their owner is incredibly special, but finding a local community of like-minded pet lovers can often be difficult. We realized that while there are countless social networks for humans, there wasn't a dedicated, safe, and engaging space for our furry friends to connect, arrange playdates, and share their milestones. The inspiration for PAWS CONNECT came from the desire to bridge this gap—to create a vibrant, digital dog park where pet owners can build communities, track their pets' health, and organize local meetups effortlessly.
What it does PAWS CONNECT is a comprehensive social platform tailored specifically for pets and their humans. Users can create detailed profiles for their pets, post updates, share photos, and interact with the community through likes and comments. A standout feature is the ability to organize and discover local pet meetups, complete with location tags and specific meetup times. Additionally, the platform offers premium health tracking features, allowing owners to keep a secure log of their pets' wellness journeys.
How we built it We built PAWS CONNECT using a robust and accessible tech stack. The frontend is a modern, responsive Single Page Application (SPA) built with React and bundled with Vite, ensuring a snappy and dynamic user experience. For the backend, we developed a custom RESTful API using PHP and PDO for secure MySQL database interactions. To handle authentication statelessly and securely, we implemented JSON Web Tokens (JWT). The entire platform is hosted on Altervista, which required us to write highly optimized and resilient backend code to accommodate shared hosting environments. We also integrated Iubenda to ensure we are fully compliant with modern privacy and cookie consent regulations.
Challenges we ran into Building a secure and reliable API on a shared hosting environment (Altervista) presented unique hurdles. We encountered issues with the server stripping authorization headers, which required us to write fallback mechanisms and .htaccess overrides to ensure our JWT authentication remained stable. We also had to redesign our file upload architecture to bypass directory permission restrictions while keeping user media secure. Additionally, ensuring robust security—like preventing cross-site scripting (XSS), spoofing in file uploads, and locking down CORS policies—required meticulous auditing and refactoring of our initial backend code.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We are incredibly proud of successfully deploying a full-stack application that is not only functional but highly secure. Implementing our own JWT authentication system from scratch and securing the API against common vulnerabilities (like SQL injection and XSS) without relying on heavy backend frameworks was a major technical win. We're also proud of the clean, intuitive user interface that makes navigating pet profiles and local meetups a breeze for our users.
What we learned This project was a masterclass in backend security and server environment management. We learned that code that works perfectly in a local development environment often needs significant adaptation to survive in production, especially on restrictive shared hosts. We deepened our understanding of HTTP headers, secure file handling, database transaction safety, and the critical importance of sanitizing all user inputs.
What's next for PAWS CONNECT We have big plans for PAWS CONNECT! Our immediate next steps include implementing an interactive map feature to visually display upcoming meetups and pet-friendly locations. We also plan to expand the health tracking suite with automated reminders for vaccinations and vet appointments. Finally, we want to introduce a direct messaging system so pet owners can securely chat and coordinate playdates one-on-one.
