Inspiration

Every day, millions of stray animals worldwide suffer from hunger, lack of shelter, and inadequate medical care. Traditional animal welfare organizations struggle with coordination, lack transparency, and often have difficulty motivating and retaining volunteers. We wanted to create a solution that leverages technology and gamification to empower individuals globally to make a measurable, documented impact on animal welfare.

What It Does

PawPoints is a revolutionary gamified platform designed to connect animal welfare volunteers across the globe. The platform enables users to:

  • Log Rescue Activities: Document feeding, rescuing, sheltering, and medical care provided to stray animals
  • Track Impact: See real-time statistics on animals helped, meals provided, and lives saved
  • Climb Rankings: Progress through an achievement-based ranking system (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master Caretaker) to stay motivated
  • Donate Transparently: Donors can view live activity feeds and track exactly how their contributions help animals
  • Build Community: Connect with other volunteers, share stories, and collaborate on rescue missions

The platform combines beautiful iOS-inspired UI design with powerful backend functionality to create an engaging experience that motivates meaningful action.

How We Built It

Frontend: Built with React and styled using Tailwind CSS for a modern, responsive design. We implemented Three.js for interactive 3D animations and Lottie Web for smooth, engaging micro-interactions that enhance user experience.

Backend: Powered by Node.js and Express.js, handling complex data management, real-time notifications, and volunteer activity tracking.

Architecture: The ranking system carefully tracks volunteer contributions across different activity types (feeding, rescue, shelter provision, medical care) to ensure fair and transparent progress tracking.

Challenges We Overcame

  1. Balancing Gamification: We had to ensure the ranking system motivated action without trivializing the serious nature of animal welfare work. Every achievement must represent genuine impact.

  2. Global Coordination: Implementing a system that works across different time zones, languages, and local regulations required careful planning and robust infrastructure.

  3. Data Accuracy & Trust: Donors need confidence that reported activities are genuine. We designed verification systems and activity logging mechanisms to ensure transparency.

  4. User Engagement: Creating an interface compelling enough to keep volunteers engaged while remaining intuitive for users with varying tech skills.
