Inspiration
Pets are more than animals; they are family. However, managing vaccinations, medical records, and health information can be challenging when everything is scattered across notebooks, phone galleries, and different platforms. This inspired us to build PawCare, a platform that brings essential pet health information together in one place.
What it does
PawCare is a secure pet health management web application that helps owners manage multiple pets.
- Pet Profiles: Create and manage individual profiles for multiple pets.
- Vaccination Reminders: Track upcoming and overdue vaccinations.
- Vaccination History: Maintain records of administered vaccines.
- Medical Document Vault: Securely upload, view, download, and manage veterinary documents, including images and PDFs.
How we built it
We built PawCare using Django 5, Django REST Framework, React 18, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL.
The backend provides REST APIs with JWT-based authentication, while the frontend offers a responsive and user-friendly interface. We implemented ownership-based access control to ensure users can only access their own pets and records. Medical documents are stored privately and accessed through authenticated backend endpoints. Server-side validation helps protect file uploads.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was managing multiple pets while keeping their health records separate. Implementing secure medical document storage and ensuring users could only access their own files required careful backend development. Balancing security, functionality, and usability was another challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have developed a full-stack application that addresses a real-world problem for pet owners. Bringing pet profiles, vaccination management, and private medical document storage into one platform is an important milestone for us.
What we learned
Through PawCare, we gained practical experience in full-stack development, REST API integration, database design, JWT authentication, private file handling, and application security. We also learned how to turn an everyday problem into a practical software solution.
What's next for PawCare
We plan to introduce email notifications for vaccination reminders, complete production deployment, integrate reliable cloud storage for medical documents, and improve the platform based on pet owners' feedback.
