Inspiration
I was inspired to make Paw Tracer as in the local area there are many stray animals that are mostly cats. I love animals and want any lost animal to find their home again so I created Paw Tracer to reunite people with their pets and also empower others to help lost pets be found. By establishing an online space where people can easily share information about lost and found animals, I hope to facilitate swift reunions, offer support to distraught pet owners, and ultimately contribute to the overall well-being and happiness of our beloved animal companions. Through this website, I aim to foster a sense of community, empathy, and collaboration among animal lovers, encouraging everyone to play an active role in reuniting lost pets with their families.
What Paw Tracer Does
With Paw Tracer you can view listings of lost or found animals. You are able to create and delete postings that other people can view. This web application has account creation and uses google for authentication. The home page contains news articles that are pet related and also displays the most recently uploaded animals.
How we built it
Paw Tracer was built using react and firebase. Users and posts information are saved and fetched when needed. With me and my teammate each doing our parts, we were able to lay a strong foundation for a project we will definitely continue to develop.
Challenges we ran into
Retendering our react app many many... many times caused our free firebase hosting to hit the read limit. While already working with only 2 people this was a challenge we had to overcome. Another challenge we ran into was introduced by us choosing not to use a built-in css helper like Material-UI thinking it would allow us to express ourselves more. This was not the case as we were finding ourselves rushing to finish CSS styles to implement all the main features.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
With only 2 people we were able to produce a strong foundation for an app that will empower our community. Building a strong foundation for something awesome to come was a byproduct of a fun, educative weekend of coding.
What we learned
For our next hackathon, we will definitely be using a CSS helper so we are able to focus most of our time into features rather than UI. Another change we would make is to utilize a different database choice.
What’s next for Paw Tracer
The next steps in our app will be to style it up more and make it more presentable. We will also add a non-google login option. We will also be adding a lot more options to help reconnect pets with their owners. Location lost/found, non-url image uploads, condition, adding contact info to user profiles, and a lot lot more.
