Inspiration
Road damage is a major infrastructure problem. Potholes can reduce road safety, damage vehicles, slow traffic, and require repeated manual inspection. We wanted to explore a better approach: instead of only detecting road damage, what if an intelligent system could detect, locate, repair, verify, and continuously map it?
This idea led to PAVE-X — a Stark X concept focused on transforming road maintenance from reactive inspection into an intelligent, data-driven process.
The Problem
Traditional road maintenance often depends on manual inspection and scheduled repairs. This can make it difficult to identify every pothole quickly, understand its severity, prioritize repairs, and verify whether a repair was successful.
A modern road-maintenance system should be able to collect road-condition data continuously, identify problems automatically, prioritize them intelligently, and maintain a digital record of road health.
Our Solution
PAVE-X is an AI-powered autonomous road-maintenance system designed around a closed-loop workflow:
SEE → DETECT → NAVIGATE → REPAIR → VERIFY → MAP
The system uses computer vision and location data to identify road damage, estimate its severity, determine its position, and prioritize maintenance. A robotic platform can then navigate toward the selected location, perform a targeted repair, and use visual verification to evaluate the result.
The collected information can be stored on a digital road-health map, creating a continuously improving infrastructure dataset.
How It Works
- SEE — Cameras and sensors collect information about the road.
- DETECT — Computer vision identifies potholes and other road-surface problems.
- ANALYZE — The system estimates location, size, severity, and priority.
- NAVIGATE — The robotic platform determines how to reach the selected location.
- REPAIR — A targeted repair mechanism is used on the damaged area.
- VERIFY — A second visual inspection checks the repair result.
- MAP — The detected and repaired locations are recorded for future maintenance.
What Makes PAVE-X Different
Most road-monitoring systems focus primarily on detection and reporting. PAVE-X is designed as a closed-loop system that connects detection with action and verification.
Instead of producing only a list of potholes, the long-term vision is to create an intelligent road-maintenance platform capable of understanding road conditions, prioritizing problems, assisting repairs, and maintaining a digital history of infrastructure health.
Technology
The V5 implementation is being developed around AI, computer vision, robotics, location intelligence, and a digital dashboard. The architecture is designed to remain modular so that individual components can be tested independently before being integrated into the complete system.
Challenges
One of the biggest challenges is connecting several different technologies into one reliable workflow. Detecting a pothole is only the first step. The system also needs to estimate its location and severity, navigate accurately, perform a controlled repair, and verify the outcome.
Another challenge is designing the system so that computer-vision predictions can be converted into useful engineering decisions rather than simply displaying an AI result.
What We Learned
Developing PAVE-X has helped us understand that real-world innovation is not just about building a single AI model or robot. It requires combining software, hardware, data, mechanical systems, testing, and user-focused design into one complete solution.
We also learned the importance of modular development, measurable testing, failure handling, and designing technology around a genuine real-world problem.
Future Vision
Our long-term vision for PAVE-X is a scalable road-maintenance platform that can support municipalities, infrastructure operators, and road-maintenance teams.
Future versions could include larger road-condition datasets, improved computer-vision models, predictive maintenance, multi-robot coordination, automated maintenance scheduling, detailed road-health analytics, and integration with smart-city infrastructure.
PAVE-X represents the Stark X vision of moving from simply detecting problems to building intelligent systems that can understand, act, verify, and continuously improve.
