Inspiration

I built ExcuseMe.AI because I was tired of coming up with excuses on the spot when missing a meeting, forgetting to reply, or being late to class. I’ve been there: being awkward, flustered, and completely out of ideas. One day, after scrambling to write a believable excuse for being late, I thought: "Why isn’t there a tool that does this for me?" So I made one. ExcuseMe.AI is a fun, fast excuse generator for real life powered by AI, full of personality, and ready to help out when your brain freezes. Whether you need something serious, silly, or completely ridiculous, it’s got your back. What started as a joke turned into something surprisingly helpful because sometimes, even a small excuse can give you a fresh start.

What It Does

  • ExcuseMe.AI is a web app that generates excuses tailored to your situation.
  • Just pick a category (like Work, School, Dating, or Social), choose a tone (Professional, Funny, Ridiculous, or Creative), and click Generate.
  • You’ll instantly get a clever excuse you can copy or tweak. It’s like ChatGPT met your inner chaos gremlin.

How We Built It

  • Built with Bolt.new for rapid prototyping and simple UI.
  • Frontend: HTML, CSS, and lightweight JavaScript.
  • Excuse logic: A combination of prewritten templates and GPT-generated patterns, categorized by topic and tone.
  • “Copy to Clipboard” and refresh features added for UX.
  • Responsive layout for mobile and desktop users.

Challenges We Ran Into

  • Writing one prompt to create the whole app to fit the One-Shot Competition criteria

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Created a working MVP with one prompt that made everyone who tested it laugh.
  • Built a scalable structure for adding more categories and tones.
  • Users loved the randomized but weirdly believable responses.

What We Learned

  • Building the app using Bolt.new
  • Deployed the app to Netlify
  • Getting custom domain through IONOS and Entri

What’s Next for ExcuseMe.AI

  • 🔥 Add email sending feature (auto-drops your excuse into Gmail).
  • 🎤 Add voice excuse generator (say your situation, get an excuse).
  • 📊 Build an “Excuse Analytics Dashboard” (most used excuses, most believable ones, etc.).
  • 🧩 Open API so other apps (calendars, school portals) can integrate.
  • 🎭 Add personality modes: Serious Boss, Chill Friend, Conspiracy Theorist, etc.

Challenge Compliance:

  • One-Shot Competition (Best project built with only a single prompt): ExcuseMe.AI was born from one bold idea: to create a smart, instant excuse generator that’s both useful and entertaining. From that single prompt, the app was fully designed and built to deliver clever, context-aware excuses with just one click. Every feature — from tone selection to category filters — emerged from that initial concept, showcasing how a lighthearted vision can become a polished, real-world solution in just one shot.
  • Deploy Challenge (Use Netlify to deploy your full-stack Bolt.new application): We deployed ExcuseMe.AI as a full-stack application on Netlify, ensuring a smooth and reliable user experience from front to back. The live app, available at https://excusemeai.netlify.app, highlights our ability to effectively leverage Netlify’s hosting infrastructure for modern, responsive web apps.
