Inspiration
I felt confused by my own GDD and didn't know what to do next.
Who it's for
People who have a task or project that has been put off for weeks or even years, for one reason or another.
What it does
REC and four questions (where I stopped, the first step, what I'm still unsure about, why this project matters). Playback on a CRT TV makes it more interactive and fun. A return date, and a calendar file with a tape link. The tape is locked with a countdown in days.
What makes it different
- It records how many minutes it takes until you start working again.
- A first step sized at 10 minutes gets you ready to start building the paused project again.
How I built it
- A tape becomes a reminder in the calendar (.ics).
- Screen changes are a VHS freeze and glitch, not a modern animation.
- The 3D room was designed as a mockup first.
Challenges I ran into
- The room's performance on phones.
- The rain sound made in code sounded strange to me, so in the end I chose a royalty-free sound effect from another website.
- The lighting of the windows at night.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
It feels like a message from my old version (to remember the project if I come back to build it again).
What I learned
How to plan an app before writing code, including for my game later, so the result is as good as it can be. I also learned how to make a video using remotion and ffmpeg with an AI agent through prompts.
What's next for Pause Tape
My NO SIGNAL tape will play on 10 January 2027. This app will remind me what I need to do next and what I worked on last.
