Inspiration
Many people stop journaling because they feel rushed, lack time, or fear privacy breaches ,so we created a gentle, offline AI companion that encourages slow living, not fast writing.
What it does
Pause & Pen lets you write freely, attach photos, and optionally ask local AI for wording suggestions or reflective questions – but only when you choose, never automatically.
How we built it
We built a React frontend, FastAPI backend, SQLite database, and integrated Ollama with Llama 3.2 to run AI completely offline on localhost.
Challenges we ran into
Ensuring the AI only assists on demand (never writes for the user) and keeping the experience truly “slow” without streaks or pressure was the hardest design challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a fully private, local-first journaling tool where the AI respects the user’s voice and the entire app fits the spirit of living slowly.
What we learned
We learned that meaningful AI assistance is about restraint , knowing when to stay silent and only help when the user asks.
What's next for Pause & Pen
We plan to add voice input (transcribed locally), dark mode, and semantic search inside old entries and all while staying 100% offline and slow-living focused.
