Inspiration
Public speaking is everywhere, in classrooms, team meetings, interviews, podcasts, or big stages. I’ve been speaking since my college days, constantly working to improve and building confidence with every talk. But not everyone wants to stand on a stage. For many, it’s about feeling comfortable speaking up in daily life. Pause was born from this journey: a tool that helps anyone, anywhere, practice and build confidence in their voice.
What it does
Pause is an AI-powered public speaking coach that listens as you practice and gives instant, actionable feedback. It analyzes your speech for pace, clarity, filler words, and pauses — helping you identify areas to improve. Instead of vague advice, Pause provides specific metrics, visual dashboards, and tailored tips so you can refine your delivery and track progress over time.
How we built it
We built Pause using Flutter for a smooth, cross-platform experience. The app integrates advanced speech-to-text processing, natural language analysis, and custom scoring algorithms to detect filler words, measure WPM, and evaluate pacing.
Challenges we ran into
- Designing feedback that feels encouraging rather than judgmental.
- Ensuring speech analysis works well across different accents and speaking styles.
- Creating simple visualizations that make complex metrics easy to understand.
- Optimizing real-time processing without requiring large device resources.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a working coach that gives instant, personalized feedback on speeches.
- Designed clear dashboards to help speakers see measurable improvement.
- Grew quickly: 50+ beta testers joined within days, and after launch we had 100+ sign-ups in just one week on Android (while iOS was still in review).
- Early users reported that Pause helped them reduce filler words and feel more confident.
What we learned
- Speakers value practical, bite-sized insights more than overwhelming reports.
- Confidence comes not just from practicing more, but from practicing with awareness.
- Simplicity in design is key, users want a coach, not a complicated tool.
What's next for Pause
- Expanding feedback to cover tone, emphasis, and storytelling impact.
- Adding personalized training plans based on user goals.
- Bringing Pause to classrooms, workplaces, and professional coaching programs.
