inspiration

both of us struggle with eczema, so we know how difficult it is to identify triggers. because eczema isn't an immediate allergic reaction, there is a significant lag time between a trigger and a flare up. whether it is diet, weather, or detergent, tracking these variables in a notes app is draining and disorganized. we wanted to build a tool that streamlines this process and provides actual clarity instead of just a list of notes.

what it does

patterns is a simplified daily log and dashboard for understanding eczema triggers. users log daily data regarding their diet, environment, and skin condition. the app generates a weekly line graph view, allowing users to see exactly when their eczema peaked in reference to different triggers. by overlaying these data points, users can finally see the correlation between their lifestyle and their skin health.

how we built it

we started our ideation process using Notability, and Google Gemini to map out the user journey. the core of the project was built in Figma, where we handled the UI design and prototyping from start to finish. we also used Canva to create our case study presentation.

challenges we ran into

as beginner designers, this was our first time prototyping a full app in Figma. our biggest hurdle was the dashboard. we wanted it to be intuitive and clean, but making multiple data lines visible at once without being overwhelming was difficult.

accomplishments that we're proud of

we are especially proud of our blob mascot, our theme and branding, and our custom sliders. we put a lot of effort into making the sliders feel as intuitive as possible for daily logging. more than anything, we are proud to have designed something that could genuinely help people find relief.

what we learned

we learned the entire design lifecycle from start to finish. we figured out how to take scattered, messy low fidelity mockups and turn them into intuitive, clear interfaces. this project taught us how to prioritize the user experience when dealing with complex, multi-variable data.

what's next for patterns

we hope to add in a camera feature to help users keep track of the progress on their skin. after this, the goal is to move from design to development. we hope to actually build the app and bring it to life so that people struggling with eczema can start finding their patterns and improving their quality of life.
