Inspiration
Small sellers, local brands, and independent creators are constantly guessing what to stock or promote next. Big companies pay for expensive trend-intelligence tools and social listening platforms — small vendors don't have that luxury. They often catch a trend after it's already fading, or invest in something that never takes off. We wanted to put trend intelligence in the hands of the people who need it most but can least afford it.
What it does
Pattern Pulse is a simple dashboard that lets any seller track what's trending in their product category — in plain language, not raw data.
- Keyword/category tracking: Enter a product category or keyword (e.g. "ethnic wear," "protein snacks")
- Pulse chart: A visual showing rising vs. declining interest over recent weeks
- AI insight summary: Plain-language explanation of why something is trending up or cooling off
- Opportunity alerts: Surfaces 2-3 related rising sub-trends the seller might not have considered
- Watchlist: Save and track multiple keywords over time
How we built it
- Frontend: React, Chart.js for trend visualization
- Data layer: Google Trends data (via pytrends) or seeded sample data for reliable demoing
- AI Layer: LLM API (Claude) to convert raw trend numbers into plain-language insights and spot related opportunities
- Deployment: Vercel
Challenges we ran into
- Turning noisy trend data into a signal that's actually useful and not overwhelming
- Making AI-generated trend explanations feel specific and trustworthy, not generic
- Designing a "pulse" visual that communicates direction and momentum at a glance
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A working end-to-end flow: enter a keyword → see a live pulse → get an AI-generated explanation → discover related trends
- Made trend intelligence approachable for someone with zero data background
- Built a tool that gives small sellers a fighting chance against much bigger competitors
What we learned
- How to design prompts that turn numeric trend data into genuinely actionable insight
- The value of designing for decision-making, not just data display
- How to rapidly prototype a data + AI product under hackathon time pressure
What's next for Pattern Pulse
- Real-time alerts when a tracked keyword starts trending sharply
- Category-specific trend packs (fashion, food, electronics) with tailored insights
