Inspiration

Choosing a career has become increasingly difficult for students and recent graduates. The internet provides thousands of courses, tutorials, roadmaps, and job descriptions, but students often struggle to understand what they should learn, what skills they are missing, and whether they are actually ready for their target career.

We realized that the problem is not a lack of information. The real problem is the lack of personalized direction.

A student may say, "I want to become a Generative AI Engineer," but still have no clear answer to questions like:

  • What skills do I already have?
  • What skills am I missing?
  • What should I learn first?
  • Which projects should I build?
  • How much time will it take?
  • Am I ready to apply for jobs?

This inspired us to build PathWise AI, an AI-powered career navigation platform designed to help students move from where they are today to where they want to be.

What PathWise AI Does

PathWise AI transforms career planning into a continuous, personalized journey:

Assess → Analyze → Plan → Learn → Build → Measure → Adapt

Users begin by providing information about their education, experience, current skills, target career, and available learning time.

PathWise AI then analyzes their current capabilities against the skills required for their desired career.

The platform identifies:

  • Current strengths
  • Skill gaps
  • Priority areas to improve
  • Recommended learning sequence
  • Personalized learning roadmap
  • Practical projects to build
  • Career readiness level

Instead of simply telling a student, "Learn Machine Learning," PathWise AI provides a structured path that explains what to learn, why it matters, what project to build, and what to focus on next.

How It Works

The core workflow of PathWise AI is:

Student Profile
      ↓
Career Goal
      ↓
Skill Assessment
      ↓
AI Skill Gap Analysis
      ↓
Personalized Roadmap
      ↓
Project Recommendations
      ↓
Progress Tracking
      ↓
Career Readiness
      ↓
Continuous Adaptation

For example, a student targeting a Generative AI Engineer role may already have strong Python and SQL skills but have gaps in LLMs, embeddings, RAG, vector databases, and deployment.

PathWise AI identifies these gaps and creates a personalized roadmap based on the student's existing knowledge and available study time.

The system can then recommend practical projects such as building a RAG-powered university knowledge assistant, allowing students to turn learning into demonstrable experience.

What Makes It Different

Many existing AI career tools behave like chatbots that provide generic advice.

PathWise AI is designed to be more than a chatbot.

The core idea is a Career Digital Twin — a continuously evolving representation of a student's career journey.

It connects:

Current Skills
      +
Experience
      +
Projects
      +
Learning Progress
      +
Target Career
      ↓
Career Readiness

As the student learns new skills and completes projects, their career profile can evolve. The goal is to continuously answer three important questions:

Where am I now?

What am I missing?

What should I do next?

This creates a closed-loop system instead of a one-time career recommendation.

How We Built It

We designed PathWise AI as a modern AI-powered web application.

The planned architecture consists of:

  • Frontend: Angular and TypeScript
  • Backend: Python and FastAPI
  • AI: Large Language Models, structured outputs, and prompt engineering
  • AI Application Layer: RAG, embeddings, and vector databases
  • Database: MongoDB
  • Deployment: Docker and cloud infrastructure

The application is organized around several core AI capabilities:

  1. Career Discovery — Helps users explore potential career directions.
  2. Skill Assessment — Builds an understanding of the user's current capabilities.
  3. Skill Gap Engine — Compares current skills with target career requirements.
  4. Roadmap Generator — Creates a personalized learning sequence.
  5. Project Recommendation Engine — Suggests projects aligned with missing skills.
  6. AI Career Mentor — Provides contextual guidance based on the user's career journey.
  7. Career Readiness Engine — Estimates progress toward the user's target role.

The AI layer is designed to use structured information about the student and target career to generate personalized recommendations rather than generic responses.

Challenges We Faced

One of the biggest challenges was deciding how to make the idea more meaningful than a simple AI chatbot.

We wanted to build something that could demonstrate genuine AI-driven personalization while remaining practical to implement within the hackathon timeframe.

Another challenge was designing the system so that recommendations are actionable. Instead of overwhelming students with long lists of courses and technologies, we focused on prioritizing skills based on the student's current level, target career, prerequisites, and available time.

We also had to balance ambition with execution. There are many features that could be added in the future, including real-time job market analysis, resume analysis, GitHub portfolio evaluation, multilingual career guidance, and deeper labor-market intelligence. For this hackathon, we focused on the core experience of transforming a student's current skills into a personalized path toward career readiness.

What We Learned

Through building PathWise AI, we learned that effective AI applications are not only about generating text. The real value comes from combining AI with structured user data, domain knowledge, personalization, and continuous feedback.

We also learned the importance of designing AI systems around a clear user journey.

For PathWise AI, that journey is:

Assess where you are → Understand where you want to go → Identify what is missing → Build a personalized path → Take action → Measure progress.

This approach helped us think of AI as a decision-support system rather than simply a conversational interface.

Future Vision

We envision PathWise AI becoming a comprehensive career intelligence platform.

Future versions could include:

  • Real-time job market intelligence
  • Personalized recommendations based on current job postings
  • Resume analysis
  • GitHub portfolio evaluation
  • Automated project evaluation
  • Skill verification through assessments
  • Interview preparation
  • Multilingual career guidance
  • Integration with learning platforms
  • AI-powered mentorship
  • Continuous career readiness tracking

Our long-term vision is to help students make career decisions with greater clarity and confidence, regardless of whether they have access to a professional career mentor.

Impact

PathWise AI aims to reduce the gap between education and employability.

Instead of asking students to navigate an overwhelming amount of information alone, we want to give them a personalized system that helps them understand their current position, identify the skills they need, and take concrete steps toward their career goals.

PathWise AI doesn't just tell students where to go. It shows them how to get there.
