Inspiration

For many students who are either living on campus, traveling to campus, or new to the college itself, it is difficult to find certain buildings just by looking at the map. These maps can often be large and confusing. In fact, upon arriving at their destination, a lot of people are still unable to find their way to a specific place or event. As a result, we were inspired to create PathPro. While applications such as Google Maps evaluate the broad landscape of the area, PathPro focuses on the navigation within the smaller locations. PathPro offers you access to many landmarks around the area and gives precise directions on how to get there - all of which happens with a couple of taps on your watch.

What it does

Our app serves as an easy-to-use navigation tool that is specific to smaller locations or events. It can be used in places such as college campuses and amusement parks or at events such as music festivals and conventions. It allows the user to scroll through a list of various important landmarks within the area and displays a simplified map on their Apple watch.

How we built it

We built this app on Xcode, taking inspiration from an Apple template for creating a watchOS App.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was developing the code because we were all pretty new to the Xcode platform and Swift language. Furthermore, there were only two days to learn how the code works and then apply our own idea into it. During the coding process, we were easily able to get data on certain landmarks and put them in a list on the app, but creating the map and implementing the landmarks into the map UI proved to be a real challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As a group made up of mostly beginners who don’t know much about coding a mobile application, we are proud of being able to come up with an innovative idea and bring it to life in a short period of time.

What we learned

In terms of technical skills, we learned the fundamentals of watchOS development and the basics of creating and designing an Apple Watch application in Xcode. After completing the project, we also learned how to use Swift and SwiftUI to integrate maps and lists containing Javascript data into our app. In terms of general skills, we learned to work together as a team in order to form and produce an idea within a few days.

What's next for PathPro

There are many ways we can further expand on this product to make it productive and helpful not only for UCSD students and staff, but for people across the nation. For example, we could have added maps of various college campuses and implemented data of landmarks on each campus. Therefore, students from different universities will be able to utilize the application. Due to the time constraint, we decided to stick with the UCSD campus. We also want to expand the applicability of the app by allowing event planners to make it specific to their events/locations, like music festivals, conventions, and amusement parks. Another way to improve the app would be to make it compatible for iPhone and Android users.
