Inspiration

Many beginners want to learn skills like web development, UI/UX, data analysis, or AI development, but they often get stuck in "tutorial hell" without knowing what to learn next or how to turn learning into practical work.

We built PathPilot to turn a confusing learning journey into a clear, actionable path.

What We Built

PathPilot is an interactive career roadmap platform that helps users:

  • Choose a career or skill goal
  • Identify skill gaps
  • Follow a phased learning roadmap
  • Complete practical missions and mini-projects
  • Earn XP, levels, streaks, and badges
  • Track their overall progress
  • Get guidance from an AI Roadmap Coach

We also added a demo experience so a first-time visitor can immediately explore the product instead of starting with an empty dashboard.

How We Built It

PathPilot was built as a modern web application with a responsive frontend and an Express backend.

The project includes:

  • Interactive roadmap and onboarding system
  • Skill Gap Analyzer
  • Practical Mission Tracker
  • Progress and gamification system
  • AI Roadmap Coach
  • Local data persistence
  • Responsive layouts for mobile, tablet, and desktop
  • Gemini-powered AI integration with an offline fallback
  • Secure server-side API handling

We used Git and GitHub throughout development and deployed the application using Google Cloud Run.

What We Learned

Building PathPilot helped us learn more about structuring a real interactive web application, managing application state, designing user flows, building a backend API, integrating AI features, handling API failures with fallbacks, and making the interface responsive across different screen sizes.

We also learned that a useful AI feature needs a reliable fallback so the application can still provide value when an external AI service is unavailable.

Challenges

One of the main challenges was making the AI Coach reliable during temporary API availability or high-demand conditions. We addressed this with retry/failover handling and an offline guidance engine.

Another challenge was designing the application so that beginners can understand their next step without being overwhelmed by too much information. We addressed this through phased roadmaps, skill-gap insights, practical missions, and progress tracking.

Making the interface work consistently across mobile, tablet, laptop, and desktop screens was another important part of the final development process.

What's Next

PathPilot could be expanded with more career paths, richer learning resources, deeper project recommendations, additional AI coaching capabilities, and more personalized progress analysis.

Our goal is to keep PathPilot focused on one simple idea:

Turn your goal into a path. Turn your path into progress.
