Inspiration

Applying to college is overwhelming. Students often have access to rankings and admissions statistics, but they rarely receive personalized guidance tailored to their unique strengths, goals, and experiences. We wanted to build a tool that acts like a personal college mentor—one that helps students understand where they stand today and what they can do to become stronger applicants.

What We Built

We built PathPilot AI, an AI-powered college guidance platform that analyzes a student's academic profile, extracurricular activities, leadership, and goals to generate personalized insights. The platform provides a readiness score, college-specific gap analysis, actionable roadmaps, scholarship recommendations, and an AI mentor that answers questions based on the student's profile—all from a single, unified student profile.

How We Built It

We designed the application using a modular architecture centered around one shared student profile. Every feature—including the dashboard, scoring engine, college analyzer, roadmap, and AI mentor—uses the same data model, ensuring recommendations stay personalized and consistent. The application runs entirely in the browser, making it fast, lightweight, and easy to deploy.

Challenges We Faced

Our biggest challenge was designing a system where every feature worked together instead of feeling like separate AI tools. We also focused heavily on transparency, ensuring that scores and recommendations were explainable rather than simply generated by AI. Balancing useful AI assistance with clear, trustworthy guidance was one of the most rewarding parts of the project.

What We Learned

This project taught us the importance of software architecture, modular design, and creating a consistent user experience. We also learned how thoughtful AI integration can solve real-world problems when combined with transparent recommendations and intuitive design.

What's Next

We plan to expand PathPilot by supporting more colleges, integrating scholarship databases, adding counselor and parent dashboards, and continuing to improve the personalization of our AI mentor. Our goal is to make high-quality college guidance accessible to every student.
