Students today have access to thousands of hackathons, internships, scholarships, competitions, and other opportunities. The problem isn't always finding opportunities — it's knowing which ones are actually right for you. Most platforms simply list opportunities and leave students to manually check eligibility, requirements, deadlines, and relevance. We wanted to build something that goes one step further. We created PathPilot to help students discover opportunities based on their own skills, interests, academic background, eligibility, and goals — turning opportunity discovery from endless searching into personalized guidance. What it does PathPilot is a personalized opportunity discovery and matching platform for students. Students create a profile with their education, skills, interests, and career goals. PathPilot then analyzes available opportunities and ranks them according to how well they match the student's profile. Instead of just showing: "Here are 50 opportunities." PathPilot answers: "Here are the opportunities that are most relevant to YOU — and here's why." It also provides match analysis, identifies strengths and gaps, offers AI-powered guidance, and turns recommendations into actionable preparation plans. How we built it We built PathPilot as a web application using React, TypeScript, Vite, and a Node.js/TypeScript backend. The core of the platform is a deterministic matching engine that evaluates opportunities against multiple aspects of a student's profile, including: Eligibility Skills Interests Academic background Preferences We designed the matching logic to be transparent rather than allowing an AI model to randomly generate a percentage. We also integrated an AI layer to provide qualitative explanations, recommendations, and application guidance on top of the calculated match. The interface was designed around a simple flow: Profile → Opportunity Radar → Match Analysis → AI Guidance → Action Plan Challenges we ran into One of our biggest challenges was making the match percentage actually meaningful rather than just displaying a static number. We had to think about how different factors such as eligibility, skills, interests, and academic background should influence a recommendation. We also faced the challenge of building and deploying the application under a tight deadline while keeping the existing UI stable and making sure the different parts of the application worked together. Another challenge was finding the right balance between AI-generated recommendations and deterministic logic. We wanted AI to enhance the experience without allowing it to make up match scores. Accomplishments that we're proud of We're proud that we turned an initial idea into a working end-to-end prototype. PathPilot doesn't stop at listing opportunities. It connects the entire journey: Discover → Match → Understand → Prepare → Act We're especially proud of the personalized matching experience, because it changes the way students interact with opportunity platforms. We're also proud of building the project from the perspective of the student — focusing on the question: "Is this opportunity actually worth my time?" What we learned We learned that building a useful product isn't just about adding more features. A good solution starts with understanding the actual problem and then making every feature support that problem. We also learned how important it is to make AI systems transparent and controllable. Instead of relying on AI for everything, combining deterministic logic with AI-generated insights can create a more trustworthy experience. Most importantly, we learned how quickly an idea can evolve when you actually build, test, break, and improve it. What's next for PathPilot Our current prototype uses structured opportunity data, but the next step is to make PathPilot much more powerful with real-time opportunity discovery. We want to connect it with verified sources and web/API-based opportunity discovery so new hackathons, internships, scholarships, and competitions can be continuously added. Future versions could also include: 🔎 Real-time opportunity aggregation 🤖 More personalized AI career guidance 📄 Resume-to-opportunity matching 🔔 Personalized deadline notifications 📈 Skill-gap analysis 📝 AI-assisted applications 🎯 Long-term personalized career roadmaps Our long-term vision is simple: PathPilot shouldn't just help students find opportunities. It should help them navigate their entire journey toward the opportunities they're capable of achieving.
