💡 Inspiration

Students often have the skills and potential to pursue great internships, jobs, programs, and challenges, but finding the right opportunity can be difficult. Most platforms provide long lists of opportunities, while students still have to figure out which ones actually match their background.

We wanted to build a system that answers a more useful question:

“Which opportunities are right for me, why do they match me, and what should I improve to become a stronger candidate?”

This idea inspired us to build PathMatchAI.

🎯 What is PathMatchAI?

PathMatchAI is an AI-powered career and opportunity matching platform that transforms a student's resume into a structured profile and uses it to identify relevant opportunities.

Instead of simply displaying opportunities, PathMatchAI provides:

The goal is to help students move from “I don't know which opportunity to choose” to “I know which opportunity fits me and what I should do next.”

⚙️ How We Built It

The application was built using Python and Streamlit.

When a student uploads a PDF or DOCX resume, PathMatchAI extracts the resume content and identifies important information such as:

Education Technical skills Projects Contact information

This information is converted into a structured student profile.

The profile is then compared against our opportunity dataset containing 20 different internships, programs, challenges, and other opportunities.

The matching engine evaluates multiple dimensions:

Required Skill Match — 40% Preferred Skill Match — 20% Education Compatibility — 10% Career Alignment — 15% Project Relevance — 15%

These factors are combined to generate an overall match score and rank the available opportunities.

🔍 Explainable Matching

A key part of PathMatchAI is that it does not stop at a match percentage.

For each recommendation, the system provides supporting information such as:

Matched required skills Missing required skills Matched preferred skills Education compatibility Career alignment Project relevance

This makes the recommendation easier for students to understand and act upon.

📈 Skill Gap Intelligence

If an opportunity requires skills that are not present in the student's profile, PathMatchAI identifies those missing skills.

This changes the system from being only a recommendation tool into an improvement tool.

Instead of simply telling a student:

“You are not a strong match.”

the system helps answer:

“What skills are missing, and what should I work on?”

🗺️ Career Roadmap

The identified skill gaps can then guide the student's career roadmap.

The overall journey is:

Resume → Student Profile → Opportunity Matching → Explanation → Skill Gaps → Career Roadmap

This gives students a clearer path from their current skills toward their desired opportunities.

🌟 What Makes It Different?

Traditional opportunity platforms mainly focus on listing opportunities.

Traditional resume screening systems mainly focus on evaluating candidates.

PathMatchAI combines both ideas into a student-focused career journey:

Understand → Match → Explain → Improve → Grow

The platform doesn't just recommend an opportunity. It explains the recommendation and helps the student understand how to become better prepared for future opportunities.

🧪 Challenges We Faced

One of the main challenges was designing a matching system that was useful while remaining understandable to the user.

We experimented with approaches for improving semantic understanding, but encountered compatibility issues while attempting to use heavier NLP/deep-learning dependencies in our development environment.

Rather than making the project dependent on a complex model that was difficult to run reliably, we focused on building a lightweight, transparent and reproducible matching engine based on structured profile information and weighted scoring.

This also made the results easier to explain to students.

📚 What We Learned

Building PathMatchAI taught us that an effective AI-powered application is not only about generating a result.

The result also needs to be:

Understandable Explainable Actionable Useful to the intended user

We learned how to combine resume processing, structured data extraction, opportunity data, scoring logic, filtering, and an interactive Streamlit interface into a complete application.

PathMatchAI is designed to reduce the gap between student skills and suitable opportunities.

For students, it can reduce the time spent searching through irrelevant opportunities and provide clearer guidance about what to improve.

For educators and career-support teams, the same approach could help provide more personalized guidance to larger numbers of students.
