Inspiration
After the pandemic, many people stopped going outside to exercise, fearing injury, sickness, and more. We want to end this fear of the outside by encouraging people to go outside with a gamefied version of exercising.
What it does
Pathfinder is a 100% free app that encourages people to go outside. It includes daily and weekly quests, which give you points. Accumulate enough points and you can trade in those points for Premium Pathfinder. Quests can include hiking trips, beach visits, and forest treks. Don’t worry, all of these places will be near your location, making it easily accessible and a fun place to go with family, or by yourself.
How we built it
We created an app using Glide app creator, which is a mostly free website which allows us to create a free app that is easy to use.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was implementing the Google sign-in page at the beginning, allowing them to save progress. However, this portion took the better part of 5 hours to learn how to code and implement. After researching how other websites would use this function to save progress, we eventually figured out how to create a google log-in page. Another challenge was implementing the google maps tracking feature into the app. This took a long time because we didn’t realize that we had to put the town and state into the search bar. However, once we figured out the correct format for putting the address, everything worked very well.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we perservered through challenges and worked together to smooth out the issues within our app, eventually making it work.
What we learned
We learned how to create and program an application, and we also learned about the Haversine formula to calculate distances within a sphere. This was a very fun project, and we really enjoyed working with this.
What's next for Pathfinder
We would have liked to incorporate a competitive side as well, allowing you to compete with friends and family. This only works as long as you have them added. You would also be able to compete on regional, national, and global leaderboards with strangers. We would also like to create an AI tour guide, which can help you identify flora and fauna, as well as giving directions, encouraging you, and even answering questions about your surroundings.
