Inspiration

Watching kids light up when they read a good book is so critical to building confidence, creativity, and curiosity. We wanted to create a space where children could not only discover the magic of reading but also feel empowered to craft their own stories

What it does

We implemented an openAI text and image generator that takes in a storybook prompt such as "Once Upon a Time" and creates 3 paragraphs and 3 photos that create a storybook. After the storybook is created, then the text can be read aloud. If the story was really good, it can be archived to be read later!

How we built it

We collaborated on vscode and created wireframes on figma. We began with building a "skeleton" which meant we made sure that the ai would generate and then moved to figma to draft up our UI/UX designs.

Challenges we ran into

Vscode live sharing had some issues with access so that slowed us down a lot in the beginning. In addition, the AI implementation took the majority of time since we wanted the themes of both the text and images to be cartoons/stories.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to make a text-to-speech option as we wanted this website to be accessible to as many kids as possible.

What we learned

We learned about the implementation of different API's possibilities and learned a lot of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript along the way.

What's next for Patchy Pages

In the future, we want to be able to increase the image and text generator model since it currently runs pretty slow. It would also be of value to increase the stories length in order to get the most out of the activity.
