Inspiration
One of our team members is a digital artist and frequently participates in online art communities. We noticed that many artists use social media as a gallery and place to display their work. Unfortunately, social media can be a cruel place, and the tag system can get disorganized really fast as people make new tags or those tags can get flooded with irrelevant stuff. This makes artists discouraged to share their art with all of this clutter that happens on social media, so our art gallery tool aims to solve this problem while also providing a space for people to grow their creativity and unite their communities through creativity.
What it does
People can draw using the built in drawing tool, then press submit drawing to download their art. Then they can upload it to the public gallery by pressing the upload button, and the gallery link shows off everyone's art.
How we built it
We built this website using next.js and react, utilizing a vector drawing component called React Sketch Canvas.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into problems regarding CSS styling and also API integration, as sometimes submitted drawings would upload really slowly or not at all. We managed to fix this issue by looking deeper into the API we were using.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team built this entire project using minimal amounts of AI/vibecoding. None of our code was generated by AI.
What we learned
Everyone on our team except for one person has never done web development, so we all gained tons of experience learning how to code for web apps.
What's next for Patchwork
In the future, Patchwork will get a feature where communities can make their very own gallery!
