Inspiration
Our inspiration emanated from a collective belief in the power of sustainable fashion to bring about impactful change and contribute to the preservation of our planet. The core idea was rooted in the profound understanding that each decision we make, especially in the realm of fashion, holds the potential for positive environmental impact. This inspiration was driven by the urgent need to protect our planet by slowing down global warming and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
What it does
EcoSphere is a web application designed to promote the use of pre-owned Patagonia products, emphasizing their quality, value, and above all the environmental impact. The platform showcases a range of second-hand clothing items, encouraging users to make eco-friendly choices by purchasing reused apparel while seeing each article's carbon emission coefficient. The core feature is a Sustainability Tracker, based on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, that allows Patagonia to accurately and comprehensively understand, quantify, and manage its GHG emissions. By knowing its emissions measurements, via our sustainability tracker, Patagonia can set its GHG emission reduction targets, track progress over time, and identify opportunities for emissions reductions and cost savings.
How we built it
Technology Stack ReactJS and NextJS: For an intuitive, responsive, and visually appealing interface. HTML and CSS: Providing structure and style for a user-friendly environment. Bootstrap: Streamlining development with a responsive grid system and pre-designed components.
Challenges we ran into
Finalizing the idea proved to be a time-consuming challenge. Navigating through various concepts and aligning them with the overarching theme of sustainability required thorough discussion and iteration. However, overcoming this challenge allowed us to refine our vision and strengthen our commitment to the project's goals.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Having a forward-thinking vision that includes continuous refinement, expansion, and an emphasis on shared responsibility. EcoSphere is not a static project; it's a dynamic journey towards a greener and more sustainable future.
What we learned
The Value of Time : The time limit of the Hackathon pushed us to the limits of our creativity and programming skills. Learning to hack and program within tight constraints was a skill in itself. It taught us to prioritize, make quick decisions, and find innovative solutions to unforeseen challenges. The pressure of the deadline became a catalyst for efficiency and collaboration. Collaborating in diverse teams : One of the most enriching aspects of the experience was the opportunity to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures Value of Sustainability : Exploring the positive impact of reused clothing on the environment became a driving force behind our project. We uncovered the transformative potential of sustainable choices in the fashion industry and how they can contribute to a positive planetary impact.
What's next for EcoSphere
To provide users with a tangible measure of their impact, we plan to further build out our Sustainability Tracker within EcoSphere. This feature will allow Patagonia to be able to calculate its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through an accurate, comprehensive and auditable emissions measurement on which they can base their climate strategy. This feature will offer real-time data on carbon footprint and water footprint reductions achieved through the use of pre-owned Patagonia products. In our vision, our app is not just a marketplace and a dashboard but a thriving community hub. Eventually, we intend to create a dedicated space within the platform for community engagement. Users will be encouraged to share their inspiring stories about sustainability, creating a collaborative space where experiences, tips, and challenges are openly discussed.
