Inspiration

The Chernobyl disaster of 1986 remains one of the most devastating nuclear incidents in human history. Yet, much of its story is buried in archives or misunderstood by the public. We were inspired to create a platform that not only documents the incident but also immerses users in the timeline, consequences, and human stories of Chernobyl—bringing history to life through the power of the web.

What it does

PastUnfolded is a dynamic website that offers an in-depth digital exploration of the Chernobyl disaster. It features interactive timelines, real survivor testimonies, visual reconstructions, and fact-checked documentation. The platform educates users about the causes, immediate effects, long-term consequences, and global impact of the disaster in a clear and engaging way.

How we built it

We developed the website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the front end, integrating responsive design for accessibility across devices. We also used tools like Bootstrap for layout, and added animations and timelines with JavaScript libraries. All content was curated from reliable sources, with media and visual data optimized for fast, engaging delivery.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was presenting heavy historical information in a way that was digestible and visually appealing. Ensuring factual accuracy while simplifying technical nuclear details also required careful balance. Additionally, working with archival imagery and incorporating interactive elements without affecting load times posed performance issues that we had to optimize.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating an informative and emotionally compelling experience that bridges historical storytelling with web technology. The seamless blend of content, design, and interactivity brings attention to Chernobyl in a way that educates without overwhelming. The positive feedback from early users validated our vision.

What we learned

We learned the importance of user experience when dealing with sensitive topics, how to integrate research-driven content with web development best practices, and how to use digital storytelling to amplify historical awareness. It also taught us a lot about team collaboration, content curation, and responsive design.

What's next for PastUnfolded

Next, we plan to expand PastUnfolded by adding multilingual support, embedding audio interviews with survivors, and incorporating AR/VR experiences for immersive learning. We also aim to scale the platform to cover other major historical events, building a digital library of humanity’s defining moments—one page at a time.
