Inspiration

My journey with PastPort began in 2020, a year defined by distance and a search for connection. It started with a simple letter I wrote on FutureMe.org, a promise to my future self that felt like a secret handshake across time. The anticipation of receiving that letter was a powerful feeling I hadn't experienced before.

That same year, I discovered the Slowly app and met someone who would become my best friend. Our messages took hours or even days to arrive, and that delay made every letter feel like a meaningful event. It was the complete opposite of the instant-gratification world I was used to.

Around the same time, I was introduced to Snapchat, where shared "Stories" created a collective narrative with my friends, even if it vanished after 24 hours.

The idea for PastPort was born from a simple question: What if you could combine the introspection of FutureMe, the meaningful delay of Slowly, and the shared social experience of Snapchat? What if you could create a time capsule, not just for yourself, but with the people who define your life's most important chapters? That's how PastPort was born—from the desire to bottle those feelings of anticipation, deep connection, and shared history.

What it does

PastPort is the world's first "Anticipatory Social Network," a mobile platform built around the creation and discovery of digital time capsules. It turns nostalgia into a shared, social, and future-oriented experience.

Its core features include:

  • Collaborative Capsules: Create shared vaults for specific life events (e.g., a school year, a vacation) that groups can fill together and unlock on a future date.
  • Public Openings: When a capsule opens, the creators can make it a public "event," allowing the world to discover and relive their shared history.
  • Time-Stamp & Friendship Capsules: A "pen pal" system where messages have a simulated travel time. The magic is that old messages can't be re-read; they automatically collect into a "Friendship Capsule" that you and your friend agree on when to unlock, turning your conversation history into a monumental event.
  • Gift Capsules: The ability to curate a time capsule as a deeply personal gift for a loved one, set to unlock on a future milestone like a birthday or wedding.

How we built it

As a "deckathon" project, we didn't write lines of code; we built a vision. Our process was one of deep ideation, user experience design, and narrative crafting.

  1. Ideation: We started by deconstructing the core emotions of nostalgia and anticipation. We mapped out every feature to ensure it served the central theme of delayed gratification.
  2. Brand & Narrative: We crafted a compelling story around the app, culminating in the 12-slide pitch deck. This involved defining the brand's voice, mission, and unique position in the market.
  3. Design & Mockups: Using design tools like Figma, we created high-fidelity mockups of the key app screens. This was crucial to make the vision feel tangible and real.
  4. Presentation Generation: We then used AI presentation tools like Gamma to rapidly translate our detailed script and visual concepts into a polished, professional pitch deck, which is our final submission.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was conceptual, not technical. The idea was so big that distilling it into a clear, concise, and compelling 12-slide presentation was a major hurdle. We had to decide which features to highlight and how to tell a story that was both ambitious and easy to understand.

Another significant challenge was solving the "Guaranteed Delivery" problem. An app that makes a 10-year promise is useless if the user can't log in. We brainstormed solutions beyond simple email/password recovery, leading us to the "12-word Recovery Phrase" concept, which is crucial for building long-term user trust.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're incredibly proud of creating a concept that feels genuinely new. We didn't just design an app; we designed a new category: the "Anticipatory Social Network."

Our biggest accomplishment is how the features harmoniously reinforce the core idea. The "Friendship Capsule" is a testament to this—it's a feature that no other social network could implement because it runs counter to the "instant engagement" model. We're also proud of crafting a strong, emotionally resonant brand and a pitch deck that clearly communicates a complex and ambitious vision.

What we learned

This project taught us that there's immense, untapped potential in delayed gratification. In a world saturated with instant everything, giving people something to look forward to is an incredibly powerful emotional hook.

We also learned the importance of building a narrative first. By focusing on the story of the graduating class or the two pen pals, the features designed themselves. It reinforced that the most successful products are not just tools; they are platforms for human experience.

What's next for PastPort

The vision is clear, and the blueprint is ready. The next steps are to bring PastPort to life:

  1. Prototype Development: Build a functional prototype based on our Figma mockups to begin user testing the core capsule creation and opening experience.
  2. Validate Core Concepts: Conduct focused user research on the most innovative features, like the "Friendship Capsule," to gauge user response and refine the mechanics.
  3. Seek Seed Funding: Use our pitch deck and project vision to attract seed funding to build out a founding engineering and design team.
  4. Strategic Partnerships: Explore partnerships with schools, universities, and event planners to integrate PastPort into major life milestones.
