Inspiration

The inspiration behind PastPort came from a desire to make learning history more interactive, engaging, and accessible. We wanted to create a platform where users could immerse themselves in historical events and conversations with significant figures from the past, transforming traditional methods of learning into a dynamic and interactive experience. By leveraging AI technology, we aimed to bring history to life and provide users with a unique way to explore and understand the past.

What it does

PastPort is an AI-powered chatbot app that allows users to converse with historical figures to learn about history in a personalized and engaging way. Users can choose from a wide range of characters, explore different time periods, and delve into significant events and movements. The app provides contextual information, and a notebook feature for users to track their learning journey. The chatbot is the centerpiece, offering insightful conversations and real-time feedback, making history come alive for users of all ages.

How we built it

We built PastPort with a robust tech stack to ensure a seamless and engaging user experience. The frontend was designed using Figma and created with Flutter, providing a smooth and intuitive interface across various devices. For the backend, we used Dart, and SQLite was our choice for the database to efficiently manage and retrieve historical data. The core of our chatbot functionality leverages the OpenAI API and prompt engineering to simulate realistic and informative conversations with historical figures. We focused on integrating these technologies cohesively to deliver a comprehensive learning platform.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges we faced was ensuring the accuracy and authenticity of the information provided by the chatbot. We needed to balance creating engaging conversations while maintaining historical integrity. Another challenge was designing an AI model that could handle a wide range of topics and respond appropriately to user queries. Additionally, integrating multimedia content and ensuring a smooth user experience across different devices posed technical challenges that required creative solutions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating an app that successfully combines technology and education to provide a unique learning experience. Our biggest accomplishment is developing a chatbot that can engage users in meaningful and educational conversations with historical figures. We also take pride in the user-friendly design of the app and the seamless integration of various features that support and enhance the chatbot experience. Successfully overcoming technical challenges and ensuring the app's accuracy and reliability is a testament to our team's dedication and hard work.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned the importance of balancing technological innovation with educational value. We gained insights into the complexities of API and prompt engineering and how to leverage these technologies to create engaging and informative user experiences. We also learned valuable lessons in project management, collaboration, and the iterative process of designing, developing, and testing a comprehensive app. This experience has broadened our understanding of the potential of AI in education and inspired us to continue exploring this field.

What's next for PastPort

Moving forward, we plan to expand PastPort by adding more historical figures and time periods to provide users with a broader range of learning opportunities. We aim to incorporate more interactive elements, such as AR/XR experiences and live Q&A sessions with historians, to further enrich the learning experience. We also plan to enhance the chatbot's capabilities by continuously improving its AI model and incorporating user feedback. Ultimately, we envision PastPort becoming a go-to platform for history enthusiasts and learners, making history accessible and engaging for everyone.
