Inspiration

In a world where identity is everything, I asked myself a simple question: What if AI could tell us who we were before we were born?

I’ve always been fascinated by reincarnation, forgotten history, and the idea that parts of our soul carry across time. The idea for PastLife AI came from blending that curiosity with the powerful storytelling capabilities of generative AI. I wanted to build something that wasn’t just technically impressive, but emotionally immersive, something that makes people pause, reflect, and feel connected to a life they never lived.

What it does

PastLife AI is a one click, fully immersive experience that generates a fictional past life identity based on your name, birthday, and a selfie.

From a single prompt, the app creates:

  • A detailed story of your "past life" in a specific historical era
  • An AI generated portrait styled to that time period
  • A personal journey including relationships, challenges, and legacy
  • A “reincarnation reflection” that ties your past self to your current life
  • A cinematic vibe with ambient music and visuals
  • A shareable PastLife Passport to spread across socials

It’s not just content, it’s an AI powered memory that never existed.

How we built it

This project was built using a single one shot prompt in Bolt.new, carefully crafted to instruct the AI to combine storytelling, visual design, ambient mood, and user personalization.

The prompt guides the AI to:

  • Collect basic user input (name, date of birth, selfie)
  • Generate a rich, historically grounded narrative
  • Create an image and layout that feels cinematic and emotionally deep
  • Integrate music and subtle motion for immersion
  • Output a shareable page that feels like a digital artifact from another life

I refined the vision across multiple drafts before submitting the final version into Bolt's AI engine, and it delivered.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was balancing emotional storytelling with technical feasibility, all while staying within the limits of a one shot prompt. I had to teach the AI to not just describe a past life, but to evoke it. Ensuring that every output felt unique, vivid, and culturally grounded (without being too generic or too random) took a lot of careful wording.

I also had to think deeply about how to guide image generation (clothing, setting, tone) using text alone, since I couldn’t design the visuals manually.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a fully immersive, emotionally powerful storytelling app from a single prompt
  • Created something that resonates with people on a deep, introspective level
  • Designed the experience to be shareable and viral ready with zero dev work
  • Delivered a polished user journey combining visuals, story, music, and personality

Most of all, I’m proud that PastLife AI doesn’t just show what AI can do, it shows what it can make us feel.

What we learned

  • AI can be more than just a tool. It can be a portal into creativity, emotion, and human curiosity
  • The power of a single well crafted prompt can rival an entire dev team if the vision is strong enough
  • Designing for emotion is just as important as designing for function, especially in a world flooded with AI tools

What's next for PastLife AI

The response so far has been incredible. People love seeing the “soul” of a character AI creates for them. Next, I want to:

  • Add voice narration to the story to make it feel like an audiobook memory
  • Expand the historical database to include more rare and obscure past eras
  • Integrate PastLife AI with social platforms for seamless sharing
  • Explore use cases for therapists, storytellers, and role players
  • Release a "timeline mode" so people can unlock multiple past lives

This is just the beginning. With PastLife AI, we’re not just building tech, we’re bending time, identity, and imagination.
