Inspiration
We were inspired by experiences with cybersecurity challenges and CTFs, specifically the use of hashcat for password cracking. Everyone likes cats, so why not make a walkthrough to explain how password crackers like it usually work?
What it does
The app lets you input a password of your choice and shows how it could be susceptible to password cracking via wordlists, and shows you how passwords are stored in hashes. It is meant to teach someone without much knowledge of cybersecurity some of the basics of password security in a visual way.
How we built it
We used React Expo.
Challenges we ran into
This was our first time touching React, and also we were really sleepy, so it was pretty hard to get all of it down. It was also originally going to be more gamified, with the idea that you would use the knowledge to try to crack other passwords and simulate hashcat - however, that was way out of scope.
Accomplishments
It definitely works, and can teach people about the existence of rainbow tables and common hashes.
