Inspiration

Our principle inspiration was to re-imagine the way television was watched and transition the experience to the Metaverse.

What it does

The app is meant to be a demonstration of how video playback works in passthrough with the custom Android video player on Quest devices.

How we built it

The demo is built using Unity3D version 2022.3.25.f1. It utilizes Oculus XR-Plugin and we used Android Studio to create an Android Library (.so) which was integrated into the Unity project as a native plugin.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating a custom video player with the SRP in Unity proved very difficult.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Being successful in extending the Unity render pipeline and being able to render multiple videos at the same time.

What we learned

A lot of OpenGL. In-depth understanding of how Unity renders to a render texture. Building custom Android libraries for Quest devices.

What's next for Passthrough TVverse

More features: controlling video playback (rewind, selecting videos on demand and many other features already present in modern television)
