Inspiration
In Morocco, medical records are mostly on paper or stored in separate hospital systems. Patients often carry stacks of documents that can be lost, incomplete, or delayed. Doctors don’t always have access to a patient’s full medical history, especially in emergencies or when patients move between cities.
We wanted to create a simple, secure, and nationwide digital health system that allows citizens and doctors to access medical records anytime, anywhere.
What it does
PassSanté gives every citizen a unique Health Digital ID linked to their national identity. It lets hospitals and clinics store and access medical records in one place, including:
- Test results and lab reports
- Prescriptions
- Imaging and radiology reports
- Vaccination history
- Medical summaries and discharge notes
Citizens can view their full medical history through a mobile app, and doctors can quickly retrieve essential information during emergencies. The system also integrates with Apple Wallet and Google Wallet for fast identification.
How we built it
We will design the system using a modern, secure tech stack:
- Frontend: React Native and Expo for cross-platform mobile apps
- Backend: FastAPI for secure APIs handling uploads, authentication, and record retrieval
- Database: PostgreSQL to store encrypted medical records and logs
We focused on interoperability so public and private hospitals can participate, and security with encrypted storage, role-based access, and full audit logging.
Challenges we ran into
Even in the ideation phase, we identified several challenges:
- Standardizing data formats across hospitals for interoperability
- Building trust among citizens and healthcare providers
- Ensuring strong data privacy and security
- Scaling the system to handle millions of patients and records
We plan to overcome these by starting with pilot hospitals, using standardized APIs, and working with the government for governance.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Designing a clear, scalable system for nationwide digital medical records
- Creating a Health Digital ID that separates identity, access, and data
- Planning a solution that works across public and private hospitals and supports emergency care
What we learned
- User adoption depends on simplicity and familiarity, tools like mobile wallets help
- Healthcare interoperability is critical for reducing errors and delays
- Security must be built-in by design not added later
What's next for PassSanté
Next, we plan to:
- Develop a prototype mobile app for citizens to view records
- Build backend APIs for hospitals to upload and retrieve data
- Pilot the system in a few hospitals before scaling nationwide
- Explore integration with national ID systems and public health programs
PassSanté aims to modernize healthcare in Morocco, improve patient care, and make medical records accessible, secure, and portable for everyone.
