Inspiration

We were inspired by local peer to peer protocols such as DP3T used in COVID-19 tracking apps gave users the ability to create a network of information without any central server storing user data. We were also inspired by fond memories of Nintendo street pass, the sweet messages sent in the game "Kind Words," and the daily social craze generated by Wordle. Finally, we were inspired by BeReal by its theme of spontaneity and attempt to encourage genuine positivity on social media.

What it does

Every day, users of the app will be prompted to write a short positive message. After answering the prompt or writing their own encouraging message, the app runs in the background with your phone during. By utilizing low energy Bluetooth technology, the app would communicate with other devices with app installed by sharing the previously submitted messages automatically to each other's devices.

At the end of the day, users will be able to read the anonymized thoughts and positive vibes of the people they have passed by during the day.

How we built it

The UX Design and prototyping were done in Figma. The front end and the back end of the app were written using JavaScript with the React Native framework.

Challenges we ran into

Implementing the Bluetooth technology was difficult when we choose to develop a cross platform app rather than a device specific one. There were challenges interfacing with the hardware of the phone.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of the idea and the design of our app. The idea is an innovative take on what we think social media could be and how it can be used to make a positive impact on mental health.

What we learned

We learned how to implement a react native framework into a cross platform app UI.

What's next for Pass a Smile

We would want to continue to enhance user security, censoring harmful content, and eventually be able to monetize pass a smile with selling stickers to use on the messages. To keep in spirit with the decentralized theme of the app, we plan to use $DESO coin in our in app purchases.
