Inspiration

Many Afghan students want to learn from online educational resources, but a large amount of high-quality educational content is available in English. For students who are more comfortable learning in Pashto, this language barrier can make online education difficult to access.

I created PashtoLearn AI to help solve this problem.

The goal is simple: make English educational content easier to understand for Pashto-speaking Afghan students by using AI to explain it in clear, natural, and easy-to-understand Pashto.

What it does

PashtoLearn AI is an AI-powered educational assistant that helps students learn from English educational content.

Students can:

  • Paste an English lesson or educational paragraph.
  • Get a simple explanation in natural Pashto.
  • View the English content alongside the Pashto explanation.
  • Ask the AI questions about the lesson.
  • Generate a 5-question multiple-choice quiz.
  • Test their understanding of the lesson.
  • Learn important English academic terms through bilingual explanations.

The system is designed to explain the meaning of educational content rather than simply translating it word-for-word.

How we built it

PashtoLearn AI is a lightweight web application powered by Gemini AI.

The application uses a modern web interface with AI-powered backend services to process educational content and generate Pashto explanations, answers, and quizzes.

We focused on making the application simple, accessible, mobile-friendly, and suitable for users with limited internet connectivity.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was generating Pashto that sounds natural and is easy for students to understand.

The system needs to preserve the meaning of the original educational content while explaining difficult concepts in simple Pashto.

We also worked on making the AI features reliable and handling temporary AI service errors without exposing technical errors to students.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have built a working AI-powered educational prototype focused on a real problem faced by Pashto-speaking learners.

Our main accomplishments include:

  • Built an AI learning assistant that explains English educational content in natural, simple Pashto.
  • Added an interactive AI tutor so students can ask questions about their lessons.
  • Added automatic 5-question quizzes to help students test their understanding.
  • Created an English and Pashto side-by-side learning experience.
  • Designed the application to be simple, accessible, mobile-friendly, and lightweight.
  • Focused on preserving natural Afghan Pashto and important Pashto characters such as ښ، ږ، ړ، ډ، ټ، ځ، څ، ګ، ې، ۍ، ئ.
  • Created a solution that demonstrates how AI can help reduce language barriers in education.

We are especially proud that the project focuses on accessibility rather than simply translating text. The goal is to help students actually understand and learn.

What we learned

We learned that AI can be used for more than translation.

With the right prompts and educational structure, AI can help transform complex information into explanations that are easier for learners to understand.

We also learned how important language accessibility is when building educational technology.

What's next for PashtoLearn AI

Our next goal is to expand PashtoLearn AI from a prototype into a more complete learning platform for Pashto-speaking students.

We plan to add:

  • Voice-based Pashto learning and AI conversation.
  • Text-to-speech and speech-to-text support.
  • Different explanation levels for beginners, intermediate learners, and advanced students.
  • More subjects including mathematics, computer science, medicine, science, and business.
  • Personalized learning paths based on each student's progress.
  • More advanced quizzes and learning assessments.
  • Offline and low-bandwidth learning capabilities.
  • A larger collection of Pashto educational resources.
  • Support for additional Afghan languages in the future.

We also want to test the platform with real students and use their feedback to improve the quality and accuracy of Pashto explanations.

Our long-term vision is to make high-quality digital education more accessible to students who are excluded from online learning because of language barriers.
