Inspiration

Growing tired of clunky, app-based trivia games at pub nights and remote team events, I wanted to build something accessible to everyone—no logins, no downloads, just instant fun. Watching friends fumble with different apps or struggle to join games sparked the idea: a browser-based trivia platform that works on any device, with the energy of a live host.

What it does

Party Trivia Live lets users host or join real-time multiplayer trivia games via QR code/room code. Choose AI host personalities, custom themes, compete with real-time leaderboards, and share scorecards to social media—all without downloads or logins.

How we built it

I started with core React/Node.js stack for frontend/backend, using WebSockets to sync questions/leaderboards across devices. Firebase handled real-time data storage, while AWS hosted static assets. I integrated QRCode.js for dynamic room codes and social APIs for sharing, plus Web Audio API for immersive sound effects.

Challenges we ran into

Syncing questions/timers across 100+ concurrent players was tough—latency issues broke game flow until I optimized WebSocket connections with rate limiting. Mobile vibration/animation triggers also had cross-browser compatibility hurdles, requiring custom fallbacks for iOS/Android.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a seamless, lag-free experience for 100 players; building intuitive AI host customization; and seeing the platform used at local pub trivia nights within weeks of launch—users loved the no-fuss access and real-time celebration animations.

What we learned

Mastered real-time data synchronization at scale, cross-browser mobile optimization, and balancing immersive features (sound/animation) with performance. Most importantly: simplicity wins—users prioritized ease of use over complex features.

What's next for this project

Add regional theme packs (e.g., EU-specific trivia), integrate venue mode for bar owners (with player count tracking), and test voice-based AI host interactions to mimic live trivia nights even more closely.
